Culture: The Student understands the contributions of people of various racial, ethic, and religion groups to the United States. The student is expected to:


describe customs and traditions of various racial, ethnic and religious groups in the United States.

What is culture?

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

Many countries are largely populated by immigrants, and the culture is influenced by the many groups of people that now make up the country. This is also a part of growth. As the countries grow, so does its cultural diversity

In the United States....

The United States is sometimes described as a "melting pot" in which different cultures have contributed their own distinct "flavors" to Americanculture. Just as cultures from around the world have influenced American culture, today American culture influences the world

Now it is your turn.....

You are going to describe and research a specific culture group. Each table will have a different group to find out what the religion, traditions and customs are of the different cultures.

Cultural Collage

OBJECTIVE: Gain an understanding of culture by researching different characteristics of a racial, ethnic and religious groups in the United States.

DIRECTIONS

· The collage must include:

On the top of the collage:

§ Name of the culture group

§ Flag of the culture group country

The REST of the collage must include:

§ Your choice of any FIVE (5) of the following characteristics of the country:

1. Major Languages

2. Major Religions

3. Popular Sports

4. Industry/Technology

5. Climate

6. Foods

7. Recreational Activities/Entertainment

8. Holidays & Celebrations

Ø Characteristics MUST be displayed with drawn PICTURES and a brief written description using words, numbers, or symbols to describe it.

Ø Each characteristic must also be LABELED as one of the traits from the list above
