Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind- Chapter 2: The Rules for Engagement ( TSI Focus Reading)
Synopsis: This chapter reveals the 5 core rules for engagement that will help you build a foundation for success.
The 5 Rules for Engagement:
- Upgrade your Attitude: Make a decision to engage every student every day. Low-SES students need you to believe in them so that they can believe in themselves.
- Build Relationships and Respect: Students who have positive relationships with their teachers experience less stress, behave more appropriately, and feel more excited about learning. Share a bit of yourself every day, respect your students, and upgrade your interactive language (make eye contact and affirm the good in them).
- Get Buy-In: As a teacher, we need to "sell" learning to our students. High-performing teachers "sell" students on themselves, the content and the learning process.
- Embrace Clarity: Research shows that the clarity of teachers' words and actions is strongly linked to student engagement. Plan with purpose and think through your lessons with the student's point of view.
- Show Your Passion: Nonverbal communication can be the most powerful communication of all. Feelings are contagious. As a teacher, you can positively affect students' states of mind simply by being in a positive state.
