What Is It?

The development of symptoms following exposure to a traumatic event.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Disturbing mental images
  • Avoiding people, places, activities, talking about the event
  • Victim might fell numb or detached or have different feelings about the world
  • Person may be on edge, jumpy, irritable

What are the Effects?

Victims may feel super stressed or on edge all of the time.

Example: National Disasters such as 9/11 caused widespread anxiety and panic regardless if the person was at the scene or not.This feeling accrued when people saw traumatic images on the news or internet.
