Superhero Training Camp
New Makerspace at WoW Thanks to a Very Generous Donor
"All he saw were opportunities.
All he did was invent an industry."
Y-5s parent, Holly Hougen, mother of Allie Allen in Mrs. Napier's class, came to us with the idea of providing funds from her family's Hougen Foundation to in some way support the educational needs of our students. She shared with us that her grandfather, Dr. E. Douglas Hougen, Founder of Hougen Manufacturing, had been an amazing inventor. With this in mind, we decided that it would be most fitting to use their family's generous donation to purchase something related to S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Learning. Thanks to their generous grant of more than $5500.00, WoW has a new Kodo Kids Makerspace, Assembly Line, Wheels and Hub Set and many new "loose parts" designed to support early childhood S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Learning. Holly came to Ellen Street to present Mrs. Mora with the Hougen Foundation check just before the Holiday break. This is what she had to say in regards to how we decided to use this very generous gift. "Honestly, I am taken back by what an amazing way you have decided to honor my grandfather's memory. I know he is smiling down in heaven knowing his hard work is being utilized 20 years after his death to inspire ingenuity and inventiveness in the minds of young children."
Baby, It's Cold Outside! Should We Play Outside?
At World of Wonder we place a high value on providing children with daily experiences of outdoor play and nature. As a licensed child care center and preschool program we are required to take our children outside 30 minutes of every three hours they are in attendance. Fenton schools has a weather policy: Children go out to recess or play outside unless temperatures fall below ten degrees actual or zero degrees when windchill is factored in. Here is a great article that supports the best practice of daily outdoor play:
