A Note from Mr. Bender
We had a wonderful time at the Day of Awesomeness on Monday. The students enjoyed a fun time outside with music, inflatables, and lots of laughter and smiles! Thank you to our PTA for hosting the event and all of our families that participated in the fundraiser over the past few weeks. Our community raised over $45,000! Tremendous job!
As we approach Thanksgiving, I want to express my appreciation for the students, staff, and families that make up our Woodward Mill community. Our amazing school would not be what it is without each of YOU. I am filled with gratitude for each member of this community, and I am thankful to be your principal.
I hope each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break filled with friends and family. We look forward to seeing students back in the building on Monday, November 29.
Enjoy your break, and Happy Thanksgiving!
Mike Bender
Principal

As part of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ family engagement initiative, the school district seeks to empower parents with tools that allow them to help their children at home. Our AKS at Home project provides math and language arts resources to support families of children in grades K-5 so that they truly are partners in their children’s learning. This support is available for families to access in the format that suits them and their schedule best. They can attend live virtual meetings, view recorded information at a time that best fits their schedule, and gain tips and suggestions on how to best help their children through tip sheets on a wide variety of topics.
We invite our families to sign up for a virtual session to learn more about how they can support their children.

Character Trait and Mindfulness Activity of the Month
Every month, we focus on a character trait to instill great character into our cubs. The character trait for the month of November is Honesty. Honesty means telling the truth, even if you might get in trouble. As a reminder, teachers will be choosing one student this month who has exhibited honesty the most to represent his/her class as the Cub of the Month.

2022 Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight
If You Come to Earth by Sophie Blackall
In this picture book written and illustrated by two-time Caldecott winner Sophie Blackall, a boy writes a letter to an imagined alien, explaining all the things he will need to know about Earth and the people who live here.
The story is composed of intricate spreads that express the vast diversity of the planet. This book sends the message that to take care of one another and the Earth, we must truly see one another as unique and valued.
Reading Rewards
Keep reading and logging your November minutes over the Thanksgiving holiday break! Students will return their November reading logs to their homeroom teacher on or before December 1st. Reading logs for the month of December will go home in the Friday, Dec. 3 weekly folders.
November logs should reflect 20 different dates in November, with at least 20 total minutes of reading for each date. Incomplete logs will not be accepted. Students can read independently or with their parents at home. After completing the monthly requirement, logs are returned to the homeroom teacher. Parent initials are required in order to verify the reading.
If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, refer to the reading rewards link on the media center page of the school website or contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.
Media Center Overdue Notices
We have many students that need to return their overdue media center books. As a reminder, all students receive media center access at a scheduled time during the week. Students in grades K and 1 check out one book a week and keep their book for one week. Students in grades 2-5 check out two books and keep their books for up to two weeks.
When students continually forget to return their media center books, they miss out on the opportunity to self-select reading materials of their choice. Thanks for your help in ensuring books are returned in a timely manner. Please contact the media staff if you have any questions about circulation procedures.
