Message from Principal Shimmin

Hello families!

Happy Thanksgiving! While this is a short week, I want to express my gratitude to each and everyone of you. Although everyone that is a part of Canyons Online learns a little differently, there is one thing that we share with brick and mortar - a sense of community. We are a brand new program, but we are developing a sense of belonging. Thank you for being a part of it all and helping to create a warm and inviting culture.

Last newsletter, we discussed some changes in the attendance policy. These changes have been updated in the handbook. This is a perfect opportunity to remind you of this resource. It has most of the answers to your questions. Please note the updates to the engagement policy on page 11-12.

In addition, in order to be counted present, students must have their cameras on and their face visible. I understand there are reasons a student chooses to not have their cameras on; however, as educators, we need to see the student engaging. This is best accomplished by turning on the cameras and participating. Teachers have resources so that students can blur or change their backgrounds to maintain privacy and other resources if this causes some issues. Please reach out to them for suggestions if turning cameras on is causing problems.

Finally, as we wrap up the year and begin 2023, please stay tuned for some fun community activities. In addition, parents please bring your students in the office to pick up their PBIS reward items! We have many students who have bought items and not picked them up. We are also discussing some things to recognize all of the great things our students are doing. Stay tuned.
