Mrs. Wiegand's Scholary News
Room 314
We are now "back in action!" I am really excited about the new school year. I have so many ideas of how to work with your children. As you may have read before, we will use the iPads in some additional ways this year. I think the students will really love it!

Another wonderful thing that is happening is that we have a student teacher. Her name is Brenna Weidner. She will be with us until the very beginning of October. Another change is that Lisa Love is no longer with us. She is a 4th grade teacher in the Washington School District. We have chosen a new aide and we hope that she will be with us sometime this week.
Here's what is happening this week. To start off with, all of the students will create a digital collage about themselves using the iPad app Pic Collage.
3rd and 4th Grade Math
This week after creating their digital collages, we will review place value up to the 100s. Before we review, the scholars will take a pretest to see what they remember from last year. On Friday, we will play 3-Digit Scramble. The scholars will have one week to play this game at home.
5th and 6th Grade Wilson Reading
After the scholars finish their digital collage, we will jump right into post testing step 4. This will give me a good idea of what they remember and what concepts I need to scaffold into our daily lessons. My plan is for us to start substep 5.1 on Thursday.
5th and 6th Grade Reading
After the scholars finish their digital collage, we will start with Read Naturally on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday they will read Fables on the iPads.
4th Grade Writing
For the next two weeks, the scholars are staying in their classrooms to learn all about the different Thinking Maps. I will be going into the classrooms to help during this time. Once a writing project begins, I will be pulling the kids to work with them in my classroom. I will be talking to each of you about how we will help your child in writing this year.
4th Grade Reading
After the scholars finish their digital collage, we will begin Read Naturally. This is a great reading program that works on fluency, accuracy, vocabulary and comprehension. We will do this on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday we will begin discussing the vocabulary for one of the Six Way Paragraphs stories called "King of Beasts." This is a fabulous book of non-fiction stories. We will discuss the vocabulary on Thursday. The scholars will read the story for homework and we will discuss the answers in class on Friday.
6th Grade Writing
The scholars will be in the general classroom for writing this week. Myself or our new aide, will be in the classroom during this time. Once a writing project begins, I will be pulling the kids to work with them in my classroom as needed.
1st Grade Reading
After the scholars finish their digital collage, we will start Fundations Unit 1. This unit reviews the letters and sounds. We will also work on phonemic awareness and fluency. You should have received a fluency packet in your child's take home folder today. The directions are on the front of the packet. If you have any questions, please let me know.
5th Grade Writing
This year we are going to continue with the push-in model for writing. When the students need support, I will work with them. In order for this to continue to be successful, I need the students to check in with me on the status of their writing projects. I have a pocket chart in my classroom where the scholars will be updating with where they are in their writing process. This will really help me know how best to help each of them.
