Armed Intruder Drill
The Oconomowoc Area School District (OASD) follows a safety protocol called ALICE (Alert, Lockdown,
Inform, Counter, Evacuate). This training encourages staff and students to respond to an armed
intruder based on the situation, rather than rely on centralized instructions in dynamic times of
crisis.
This Thursday, September 13th Nature Hill will hold an emergency-armed intruder practice drill.
During this intensive drill, local law enforcement and individuals from our district Building and
Grounds department will be on hand to help monitor all exercises.
The purpose of the emergency-armed intruder practice drill is to provide students and staff the
opportunity to practice making a well-informed decision if an unsafe and unexpected situation were
to happen at school.
Before this intensive drill with students is held, teachers will hold age-appropriate discussions
around what will take place during the training, how to calmly complete the exercise, what
materials they may need to have on them, and what the expectations are for remaining orderly.
During our drill students and staff will be discussing and practicing:
How to effectively barricade a door if this is the best course of action based on the information
provided How to be flexible in their response to an emergency, based on the information available
How to feel empowered in deciding the safest response, based on the information available
Students and staff will also be walking to designated rally points around the school in conjunction
with this drill. These pre-determined locations are where staff and students will meet in the case
of a school emergency.
Evacuation to a safe area away from our school building ensures that staff and students are out of
harm's way. We have been in contact with businesses close to rally points; along with neighbors
surrounding these locations.
Our primary goal and objective is to ensure the safety of our students and staff while taking a
proactive approach if we were ever to encounter an unsafe person entering any of our district
buildings.
Also, be sure to follow the Oconomowoc Area School District’s social media channels (Facebook:
@oconomowocschools, Twitter: @oconschools, and Instagram: oconomowocschools), along with the news
updates on the district website at www.oasd.org. In the event of an emergency, these platforms will
be used to share information and updates about the situation with families and the community.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sincerely,
Chuck Olson
