Report Cards Went Home Friday!
From Mr. Wilmore, Instrumental Music Teacher
3rd, 4th, and 5th grade parents: What do Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Prince Harry, and Dana Carvey all have in common? They all played an instrument in elementary school! The time is finally here for your son or daughter to sign-up to play an instrument in the Campbell-Savona instrumental music program.
This is such an exciting time for your son or daughter and the benefits of playing an instrument are endless! EVERYBODY IS WELCOME!
I wanted to take this time to discuss the process of instrument selection over the next couple of weeks. For the past three weeks the 3rd graders have been learning about the instrument families in General Music class and have listened to recordings of the instrument, or listened to the teacher perform on the instruments to find out the instrument they like the sound of. The 4th graders have been performing on the recorders since last year, and as stated above, IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO SIGN UP TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT!
The week of April 30th to May 4th - Packets will be handed to every single 3rd, 4th and 5th grade student to take home. Please read this over with your child and see if they are interested in joining. This packet will give you and your child a chance to pick 3 instruments they are interested in playing.
We are in the digital age, so this sign-up is also in digital form by ways of a Google Form. If you are interested, please fill out the Google Form that is included in Mr. Anderson's SMORE email that week with all pertinent information. This is the preferred method.
If you do not wish to fill-out the form digitally, please fill out the packet I have sent home with your child and return it to me by FRIDAY, MAY 11th.
Please mark the following dates in your calendar:
April 30th – May 4th – Instrument Recruitment Packets will be sent home with all students. All interested students and parents please fill out the Google Form or return the paper back to me by May 11th –
May 11th - All sign-up information is due. I know all of you have questions about where and how to get instruments and how much they cost. We have a deal in place with two local music retailers and all information will be sent out when instruments are selected for your child. The school has instruments to borrow as well. If you are unable to afford an instrument please let me know. Money should not get in the way of a student’s instrumental learning, I will not let that happen!

“The arts enrich communities and employees, and also stimulate the kind of intellectual curiosity our company needs to stay competitive.” Norma R. Augustine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Martin Marietta Corporation. Music students out-perform non-music students on achievement tests in reading and math. Skills such as reading, anticipating, memory, listening, forecasting, recall, and concentration are developed in musical performance, and these skills are valuable to students in math, reading, and science. B. Friedman,
“An Evaluation of the Achievement in Reading and Arithmetic of Pupils in Elementary School Instrumental Music Classes,” Dissertation Abstracts International. “Music is exciting. It is thrilling to be sitting in a group of musicians playing the same piece of music. You are part of a great, powerful, vibrant entity. And nothing beats the feeling you get when you've practiced a difficult section over and over and finally get it right. Music is important. It says things your heart can't say any other way, and in a language everyone speaks. Music crosses borders, turns smiles into frowns, and vice versa. These observations are shared with a hope: that, when schools cut back on music classes, they really think about what they're doing - and don't take music for granted.”
