Tips on Getting a Career in the Federal Government

My senior year of college, I decided it was time to do an internship. Back then, our Career Services office did not have fancy job databases like we do now. Instead, outside of the office there were index cards thumbtacked to a cork bulletin board. I browsed the internships and jobs until my eyes fell upon “Congressional Intern”. Well as a Political Science major I thought perfect! I grabbed the card and went inside the office to get more information.

Interested in working in the the Foreign Service and earning your master's degree? Learn more about the Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program by registering for this Virtual Information Session or watch this session in the Career and Professional Development Office on Monday, September 12 at 11 a.m. The Director of Fellowships, Caroline Morris, will be there to answer application questions. The Rangel Graduate Fellowship application deadline is quickly approaching!
The Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program provides benefits of up to $95,000 over two years toward a two-year master's degree, arranges internships on Capitol Hill and at U.S. embassies, and provides mentorship and professional development support. Fellows can use the fellowship to attend two-year master's programs in U.S. institutions to study an area of relevance to the Foreign Service, including international relations, public policy, public administration, economics, or business administration. Upon successful completion of the two-year fellowship and Foreign Service entry requirements, Fellows join the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, embarking on a uniquely rewarding career of international service.
Applicants must be college seniors or graduates planning to start two-year graduate programs in fall 2017, must have GPAs of at least 3.2, and must be U.S. citizens. The program welcomes any undergraduate major and encourages applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. Wednesday, September 14
On Wednesday, September 14, five government agencies will participate in a panel and networking event for St. Edward’s University students and alumni. Representatives from participating agencies will discuss internships and full-time opportunities available in the United States and abroad. Opportunities are available for students and alumni from almost all majors and academic programs.
Please note that both internship and full-time job opportunities with federal government agencies require a lengthy application process. Therefore, deadlines to apply for opportunities will be coming up as early as October 1. Hence, you will NOT want to miss the opportunity to meet recruiters THIS week that can help you through the application process!

H-E-B Management Intern
The H-E-B Store Operations Internship program is designed to prepare high talent and self-motivated individuals for future careers with H-E-B. The program is a 10-week summer internship that offers college students the opportunity to combine work experience and professional development with formal education. This program offers you an opportunity to work in an environment where you can learn, investigate career choices, and apply your education.
Interns will work approximately 40 hours a week in a designated store location. You will receive a company overview, leadership development training, and exposure to Senior Leadership. Each intern will receive a final performance evaluation and a career counseling session. In addition to practical on-the-job training you will be challenged with assignments and projects relevant to your store location or region. These assignments will culminate in a final presentation to the Business Leaders at the conclusion of your internship. Upon successful completion of your first internship, you may be considered to continue in the program for subsequent internships.

Opportunity at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)
TxDOT's Environmental Affairs Division (ENV) is accepting applications for undergraduate or graduate volunteer positions within the Archeology and History section to assist in implementing a comprehensive educational and public awareness communication plan for the program.
**This unpaid position can result in credit under a degree program or internship requirement if the applicant chooses to pursue it. Hours can be scheduled during the regular business day Monday-Friday. Teleworking is also offered.
Responsibilities for Volunteer:
- Assists TxDOT's Environmental Affairs division with communication and outreach plans that support the Archeology and History program's objectives and milestones
- Assists developing and maintaining stakeholder lists.
- Assists in developing and distributing, through a variety of techniques, informational materials such as brochures, handouts,presentations, newsletters, social media content and other materials to inform and update program audiences.
- Assists in developing and implementing public involvement and awareness programs and strategies for transportation projects and programs.
- Assists in monitoring and tracking activities and outcomes. Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing public involvement activities and outreach for special events.
- Proactively seeks opportunities to build awareness to keep communities, businesses, and other interested parties informed of planning and outreach project activities.
- Researches, develops innovative public involvement and outreach techniques, audience personas, communications templates and more.
Qualifications
- Strong writing skills;
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, etc) and social media platforms.
- Enrollment in a degree-program in Public History, Anthropology, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or Journalism.
