The Jefferson Journal March 13th
Message from Wausau School District
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
The Wausau School District continues to monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) on a daily basis and we are addressing the epidemic in a coordinated manner with local, state, and federal health agencies.
All Before and After-school Events, Activities, Athletics, Clubs, and G2M Classes
To prevent the spread of illness, effective Sunday, March 15, at midnight, all before and after-school events, activities, athletics, clubs, and G2M classes will be canceled through Sunday, March 29.
Virtual Learning
The District is prepared to continue student learning in the event the District needs to close school(s). Should this occur, instruction will be delivered through Virtual Learning. As a reminder, Virtual Learning is designed to continue student learning and deliver high-quality content during days that students are not able to be in the school building for any reason.
To be ready in the event that school is closed, all staff and students will be asked to take their device home each school day beginning tomorrow, Friday, March 13. Middle and high school students are already familiar with taking their Chromebooks home each school day. As this is a new practice for elementary students, please consider the following while your child(ren)’s device is at your home:
Taking iPads Home
iPads and charging cubes/cords will be placed into a zipped plastic bag and will be sent home each night
Backpack Safety -- iPads only come out of the Backpack at school and home
If an iPad is not returned to school, parents will be contacted
Together with your child(ren), identify a safe, elevated spot for the iPad at home
Remind your child(ren) to charge the iPad each night
Marathon County Health Department
If our school(s) are closed at the direction of the Marathon County Health Department, the District will notify families and the community. If schools are closed by the Marathon County Health Department, no one will be allowed in the schools until the Health Department allows re-entry.
Medications and Medical Supplies
Please note that any medications stored at the schools on behalf of students will remain at the schools. We strongly advise parents and guardians to obtain essential supplies of their child(ren)’s medications for at-home use. Also, children will be bringing glasses, hearing aids, and medical supplies (not medications) home each night.
Information is rapidly changing and you will be kept informed as we continue to prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and families. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility in this ever-changing situation.
Frequently Asked Questions about COVID-19
Frequently Asked Questions about Coronavirus and Children
Estimados padres / guardianes y personal,
Llevando iPads a casa

Wisconsin State Forward Testing
The Wisconsin Forward Exam testing for Grades 3, 4, and 5 is scheduled to begin soon. Please do not schedule any appointments or vacations during your child’s testing times. Also, please make sure that your child is well rested to help with the test taking. Below is the schedule of the tests that they will be participating in.
iPad Insurance
iPads went home with every student today.
If you have not already paid the ipad insurance, please send $10 (cash or check payable to WSD) per device, to the school office.
If payment is not received or insurance declined, families assume the full cost of any and all repairs caused by misuse, abuse, or accident.
If you are unsure if you have already paid, please call the school office at 715-261-0175.

Volunteer Corner
If you left a comment on last school year’s volunteer survey, be watching this spot in upcoming newsletters. I will be commenting and/or answering some comments that might be of interest to all.
As always…any volunteer questions can be directed to me, Roxane Hagedorn. I’m happy to help!
Some comments regarding field trips…
- If the class is going on a field trip or has a schedule change the day I volunteer, I would like them to let me know. I have been frustrated to get there and find the classroom dark and locked.
- Occasionally it's not real clear on where to meet for field trips (classroom, school entrance, by bus, etc.)
Answer!
We are going to make a better effort at this. We are human and sometimes forget but we are going to try and make things clearer and value your time.
If you are ever unsure, don’t be afraid to ask the classroom teacher. They value your volunteerism.

Exclusion From School
Students may be excluded from school for communicable disease control for the following conditions:
Undiagnosed or untreated skin rash or sores that cannot be covered
Fever (temperature 100.5ºF or greater or if behaviors such as excessive sleepiness or coughing which might be interfering with the student’s learning.) Child must be fever-free without fever medicine for 24 hours before returning to school
Vomiting two or more times in the previous 24 hours. Exclusion will continue until vomiting resolves or a health care provider determines the cause is not contagious.
Diarrhea three times in the previous 24 hours or child is incontinent (has an “accident”)
Upper respiratory illness with frequent cough/drainage
“Pinkeye” (conjunctivitis) if accompanied by fever, behavioral change or inability to avoid touching eyes. (Antibiotics not required for return.)
Strep throat (until 24 hours after treatment has begun, or health practitioner approval.)
Students whose immunization status is not in compliance with the Wisconsin immunization law
Students with known suppressed immunity may be excluded, for their protection, when cases of communicable disease (i.e., measles, chickenpox) occur in school
When a student with symptoms of a communicable disease reports to the health area, the principal, school nurse, or staff designated by principal or school nurse may exclude the student until they no longer are infectious or pose a risk to others, or per physician’s written instructions.

Raptor Visitor Management System
The Raptor Visitor Management System has been up and running since January 2, 2020. The new process has been going very smoothly.
Upon entering a District school, visitors will be asked to present a valid state-issued ID. No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded. The system is not connected to any other database and information is not shared with any outside agency.
Once the visitor’s entry is approved, a badge will be issued that identifies the name of the visitor, the date and time, and the purpose of the visit. Children who do not have a valid ID may be allowed to visit as long as they are accompanied by an adult who has completed the check-in process and has been issued a badge. Regular volunteers and all contractors or subcontractors will be subject to the same procedure as visitors at all times. If the visitor’s identity cannot be verified through an acceptable form of identification, the visitor will not be allowed to proceed past the office area. The Raptor system does not replace our current volunteer process.
A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools to simply pick up or drop off an item in the office. A badge is also not necessary for those who are picking up their child from the office as long as they are not going into the school building.
The Raptor Visitor Management System and process will only be used during school hours. Attendees at after-hours events such as performances, ceremonies, or academic/athletic competitions will not be required to complete the process.
Thank you for your cooperation in supporting our strengthened safety and security protocols in the Wausau School District.
