Superintendent's Reflections
End-of-Year Calendar
The last day of student attendance will remain Thursday, June 6 (a full day of school for students). Eighth grade graduation dates also will stay on schedule.
The District had four days of weather-related closings. Our calendar built in two days of student attendance above the minimum, and this year (and we expect this year only), the state allowed school districts to credit parent-teacher conference days toward student attendance.
The last day for certified and support staff is Tuesday, June 11. That end date will allow staff to make up three of the four days missed, and to collaborate on important work, including all-staff crisis-response training and curriculum work, that will prepare the District for a smooth start to the 2019-2020 school year.
Attea Students Give a Hand
The team distributed one hand to a second grade student within the district; most recently, they provided a hand to Alex, a fifth grade student who was recommended by Shriners Children's Hospital. The Attea students met Alex and his classmates through a Google Hangout. In the two years that they have been part of e-NABLE, they have built hands that are now in the following locations:
- Glenview
- Huntley, Ill.
- The Dominican Republic
- Cork, Ireland
- Algiers
- The e-NABLE Living Classroom at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Uitica, NY
Resolutions & Discussion
Elimination of Student Service Administrator Positions
Middle School Science Resource Adoption
- Tommie Arens, District science instructional coach
- Emma Russell, Springman science teacher
- Lisa Nathaus, Attea science teacher
They explained that the adoption process of the new science resources was rigorous. The adoption committee of 14 middle school science teachers piloted two resources for a six-month period. Based on surveys that the teachers took, the committee chose to adopt Science Dimensions from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH). The benefits of Science Dimensions include:
It aligns well with NGSS.
-
It supports student achievement in writing claim, evidence
and reasoning responses.
-
It provides excellent phenomenon introductions to science
concepts that students find very engaging.
-
It offers both digital and paper resources for teachers and students.
-
The HMH support team is phenomenal.
-
Science Dimensions easily supplements the District NGSS aligned middle
school science curriculum designed by each grade level science committee.
Teachers will begin receiving professional development this spring, and it will be used in all middle school science classes in the fall.
