Mrs. Cammarota's Sixth Grade Survey
This week Ms. Cammarota’s 6th grade literacy classes are writing an essay on the topic “Traditional Learning versus Distance Learning: Which is Better For Sixth Graders?” Now experienced in both types of learning, students brainstormed the similarities and differences between the two methods. Next, they wrote a claim choosing the better method in their opinion. After viewing a video lesson from their teacher each day, the students worked on a different component of the essay. Students had the option of attending a video conference or receiving written feedback every day. The completed essays were submitted on Friday. The final verdict: the majority of 6th graders prefer traditional learning in a school!
Ms. Comer's Flipgrid Data
Ms. Comer wants to shout out all of her classes. The picture shows her Flipgrid data and how many videos have been recorded from Tuesday to Tuesday. She is having students review notes, examples, and homework and asking questions about mathematics. Any student can look at notes and say they understand everything, but a great student can look at their work and identify where they are struggling, and be honest about it. Her students have really taken ownership of their learning, and are willing to be vulnerable about their understanding. She is beyond proud of her students, and misses them so much. It’s not only great to see how they’re doing mathematically, but also just as people, it’s great to see their faces and hear their voices. She smiles watching every single video!
Mrs. Corley's Book Review and Friday Fun!
For the past two weeks in Mrs. Corley’s class we have been reading Bang. The students have an option of reading along with me on Screencastify or read independently. We are up to chapter 16 and moving right along. In Writing, the students were asked to complete a compare and contrast graphic organizer on Google Docs about the two main characters in Bang. Then they turned their research into a 2 paragraph well-written essay. One paragraph consisted of the similarities and the other paragraph was the differences between the characters. Thank you to the students who have logged onto Zoom. I love seeing my student’s faces. In fact, this Friday, we will be celebrating FUN FRIDAY!!! The students in Mrs. Corley and Mrs. Stebich’s class will log onto Zoom for a 30 minute game of Pictionary! Stay tuned to hear the winner…
Miss you all. Please continue to check BOTH Reading and Writing Google Classrooms and connect to each zoom you see on GC @ 11:30.
E-Sports with Mr. DiMarco
E-Sports had a fantastic showing in the Winter Open, and we were poised to make big strides in the Spring Major. The bad news of the school building closing down (and our equipment being locked up as well) has not stopped our E-Sports team from persevering as some (unfortunately not all) still get to compete this spring. The 8-week season will be followed by playoffs in May.
For the first week of matches, we'd like to give a special shout out to Adam Cruz who showed dominance and dexterity in his crushing win over Sacramento California's Rosemont High School. He took a clean 2-0 win in his Super Smash Brothers Tournament debut, controlling the stage and the pace of the match.
Stay tuned for other match results from Gavin Ashworth, Adrian Garlic, Jacee Rodas, and more as they compete this spring!
Ms. Fitzgerald's AVID Class
In AVID last week, we held a virtual Philosophical Chairs. The students read an article about the effects of social media on teens and utilized writing in the margin strategies while doing so. Then, they stated their positions on two given statements , while also replying to other students’ positions. This week, they’re participating in an AVID9 Choice Board based on AVID fundamentals of WICOR- writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading They choose an activity each day from one skill area for a total of one from each by the end of the week.
Mrs. Ford's English 9 Classes
In Mrs. Ford’s English 9 classes, students are continuing to study “To Kill a Mockingbird.” We are also incorporating technology by having Zoom calls and completing FlipGrids once a week. It is the best way to see each other’s faces!
Mr. Landis and American Democracy
In American Democracy, we are learning about the various individuals and events that led up to outbreak of the Civil War. Students are dissecting a various array of informational texts and videos that follow these individuals and events.
Mr. Landis and his daughter are learning about the local and state laws and introducing her to the Constitution.

How is your adjustment to remote learning going?
Although I adjusted to remote learning pretty fast it is not my cup of tea. I believe that I learn better in a classroom setting around my peers with face to face socialization.
What is the hardest thing about this adjustment? What is one aspect that you enjoy more than traditional school?
I would have to say that the hardest thing about this adjustment for me is staying organized and focused. One aspect I enjoy more than traditional school is the fact that I get to run on my own schedule.
What are you doing to keep busy when your school work is finished?
I have been putting my cooking and baking skills to work and also making sure I meditate to keep a positive mind.
What college(s) have you been accepted to, and where are you choosing to go?
I have been accepted into Lincoln University and Bowie State University. I am still undecided on what school I would like to attend.
What will be your course of study?
I will be studying nursing so that I can become a Registered Nurse!
What is one message you would like to share with your fellow seniors at Woodbury High School?
To the class of 2020, although this may not be the average high school senior year we were all looking forward to, this virus is not stopping us. Yes it may have put a pause in our senior year but we will prevail, we still have so many great things to look forward to in the future hope all of you guys and your families are staying safe during this time.
