Cottage Lake Elementary - May 16, 2021

A Note from Principal Welch

Dear Families,

I hope you all have enjoyed this fabulous weekend! I am looking forward to getting outside a little more tomorrow before the rain returns for our week ahead.

As you read below, there is a lot of information for you to read through. Please do read the COVID batch testing piece and if your student is hybrid and in grades 2-5, please visit the link shared below to either Opt them in for batch testing or Opt them out of testing. Thank you!

You will also find below that I shared with you the OPTIONAL parent input form for 2021-2022 class placements, technology return information for district-issued devices, and a calendar update for May. The next few weeks will fly by and I will be adding a lot of information in the newsletters for you. Thank you for reading through them.

Thank you for your continued partnership!

Take care,

~ Jen Welch, Principal

•• SCHOOL NEWS ••

COVID batch testing continues

We have continued to test our Cohort A and Cohort B students as part of our batch testing. We launched a new company to process our tests on Friday and I received results Saturday morning. All tests returned negative last week! Great job, Sailors!! Lets continue to keep everyone healthy!!

New/Updated COVID batch testing consent

This past week, I emailed all families in our Hybrid A and B classes regarding our new COVID batch testing company. With this change in vendors, we have a new/updated consent form as well. We need all families to provide consent for the testing again! [As of 8:00 AM, we have responses for approximately 70 students.] If you have already provided your consent/completed this new form for testing since Wednesday morning, you are good to go.

PLEASE CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE NEW CONSENT FORM. At this link, you can either Opt-In for testing or you can Opt-Out of testing. If you had previously Opted out of testing, you don't need to opt-out again. If you want your child(ren) to participate in testing, please visit THIS LINK to complete the consent form. We would like EVERY family with us for Hybrid learning, in grades 2-5, to either Opt-In or Opt-Out.

Thank you for your support and attention.

OPTIONAL Parent Input form for 2021-2022 school year

Each year we share an OPTIONAL parent input form with families. This is a way to collect information from you as we look at creating classes for the fall. Please know these forms are NOT confidential and will be shared with classroom teachers. We will also do not accept specific teacher requests. There are possible changes to staffing that occur over the summer and teacher placement is not something we can guarantee. We strive to create classes that are balanced on a number of levels. Ms. Welch assigns the teachers to the classes.

If you would like to complete the OPTIONAL parent input form for the 2021-2022 school year, please CLICK HERE. This form is for students who will be in grades Kindergarten-Grade 5 NEXT year. If you have more than one child at Cottage Lake, we ask you to complete one form per child.

** In the coming weeks (and months), we will be reviewing student enrollment numbers closely. At this time, there is a likelihood we will need to create split/multi-grade classes at a few grade levels based on enrollment. It is always our goal to not have split classes, but sometimes we can't avoid them. There is a question in the survey regarding split classes.

Calendar clarifications

  • Friday, May 28 - No School
  • Monday, May 31 - No School
  • Friday, June 18 - Last Day of School is a FULL DAY! We will dismiss at 3:30 PM.

Northshore-Issued Technology device return updates

This spring, we will be collecting all district-issued computers back from students. We recognize all our computers need a good cleaning and an update. We would like all devices returned to Cottage Lake no later than Friday, June 18. If your district device is the only device you have and the only way for your child to access learning, you can make special arrangements with Ms. Welch and Mr. Paganini to keep the device until the end of learning on Friday, June 18.

Below is the schedule for when students and families should plan to return devices to Cottage Lake.

  • Tuesday, June 15 - Students who are in Cohort A of Hybrid should plan to bring their district-issued computer/iPad (AND charger) back to school with them on this day.
  • Wednesday, June 16 - Students who are learning fully remote should plan to bring their district-issued computer/iPad (AND charger) back to school with them on this day.
  • Thursday, June 17 - Students who are in Cohort B of Hybrid should plan to bring their district-issued computer/iPad (AND charger) back to school with them on this day.
  • Friday, June 18 - This is our final turn-in of district-issued devices from Cohort A, Cohort B, or students who are fully remote.

It is very important students bring back their device AND the charger!

** If you have a district-issued device at home that is not being used, that device may be returned at any time! Please feel free to email Mr. Paganini (mpaganini@nsd.org) or Ms. Welch (jwelch@nsd.org) to set up a time for this return.

Student Academic and Well-Being Recovery Plan and Survey

The Northshore School District has developed a brief survey for students and parents/guardians as one method of gathering input for our state-required Student Academic and Well-Being Recovery Plan. Survey responses will help us make decisions about the types of academic and well-being supports we should include in our plan as we recover from the impact of the pandemic.

The Plan is intended to identify the supports that will be provided for any student who may need it. Parents of students who are served with a 504 or IEP will also be contacted by their student’s teacher of Special Education regarding Special Education Recovery Services. Click here to provide your input. Students will receive a link to the survey in their student email inbox too.

Northshore Virtual Program

The District is planning to offer the Northshore Virtual Program for the 2021-2022 school year for students who might prefer learning online or do not yet feel comfortable returning to in-person learning. The program will support learning in a 100% online format for any interested student in grades K-12. You can learn more by visiting www.nsd.org/nvp. In order to support our online planning efforts, you are encouraged to submit your Intent to Enroll form for this program as soon as possible.

If you are planning to attend our full-time, in-person model in the fall (traditional school model), you do not need to fill out a form.

Unleash the Brilliance (UtB)

The Northshore School District was one of two districts in the state, awarded with the Racial Discipline Gap grant from OSPI. We have partnered with Unleash the Brilliance (UTB) to empower youth to make positive decisions and build a positive partnership between schools and families. The collaboration between Northshore and UTB is to inspire youth to share ideas and tools with students that empower and inspire them to value the process of learning and proactively engage in their education, in their future, and with their community. Unleash the Brilliance (UTB) is hosting parent and student success workshops in partnership with the Northshore School District to reduce infractions and discipline. These informational workshops will in turn help staff to become aware of related issues affecting our students.

These free workshops are open to all Northshore families and will focus on:

  • Best practices on how to prevent suspension or expulsion
  • How to manage the disciplinary hearing, appeal, and review procedures to work collaboratively to find alternatives to suspension or expulsion
  • Share your thoughts, hopes, concerns and hear from other parents
