Newsletter Week 4 Term 2

West Park School 28th May 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora, Talofa, Kia Orana, Greetings Parents, Grandparents, and Caregivers,

We are almost halfway through what has become a very busy term. With two weeks of Parent Conferences now completed I hope that parents now have a stronger sense of where their child is at and the next steps to help them on their learning journey. There have been numerous visits across the different teams with rich learning experiences. We appreciate your support in communicating permissions and questions to teachers alongside coming along as parent help, it really takes a village.

We have an exciting week coming up in Week 5 with West Park's Book Week. There are some exciting things planned including bringing two well-known books to life with each class going to a special "library" visit organised by our wonderful Librirain Fiona. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be running Monday afternoon through to Thursday Morning. We also have an opportunity for children to swap books Thursday lunchtime, a great way to share the love of reading with a sustainable twist. The week will then be celebrated with something West Park Children do so well...A dress-up day! Children are asked to dress up as their favourite character, author, or even book! Keep in the loop with all the goings-on through SeeSaw.

As the term goes on teachers will be doing more assessments and are beginning to formulate your child's mid-year report. This will be handed out at the end of the term.

In the meantime stay warm, stay safe.

Kind regards

Luis

West Park School's Book Week - Week 5

Scholastic Book Fair

Happening in Room 1 from the afternoon of Monday 31st of May (3 pm) to Thursday 3rd morning (9:30 am). This is a very successful fundraiser for the school with proceeds going to new classroom and library resources. If you are able to help with set up or on the day please email helena@westpark.school.nz as we are low on volunteers.

‘Books Alive!’

A ‘Books alive’ class session will be held during lesson time. This activity will take well-known children's books and give children a chance to really experience it in a different way using all their senses!

Book Swap

This will be on at lunchtime on Thursday. Children can bring as many books as they like to the hall before school. They will get a 'voucher' specifying how many books they brought and will be able to swap them for the same amount at lunchtime. This is a great way to share favourite books and get some new ones at the same time!

Dress Up Day

To end our fabulous week we ask that children come to school on Friday the 4th of June dressed as their favourite character, author or book. There will be prizes for best dressed across the year groups.

This is shaping up to be a fun week and both Miss Martin and Fiona are very excited to be able to share the love of books across the school.

Great Mahi from one of our students

James has been learning how to write sequence story. He read Prickles the Porcupine story and watched a real porcupine video to understand how they use their prickles to protect themselves. James said “ looks like a hedgehog! Don’t touch it, very dangerous !!!“ Amazing writing James!

Blue Dragon Book Fair at Ngaio Town Hall

Saturday 29 May 9am to 4pm AND Sunday 30 May 9am to 1pm.

You are invited to come and buy books, puzzles/games, DVDs and CDs. Children’s books are $1 each. Other books are $3 (and $2 each, after the first five books purchased).

If you feel it's not long since we had our last book fair, in November, you'd be right. However, this is the time of year that works well for a number of reasons, and last year was - please - just an aberration in that we had to postpone twice.

If you have books to donate, please be in touch. We are particularly happy to have more children’s books.

All proceeds - over $16,000 last year - will go to the Blue Dragon Children's Foundation, which helps to break the poverty cycle for Vietnam's poorest children. This includes street kids, children with disabilities, children from rural families living in extreme poverty, and victims of human trafficking and slavery.
