Jump Rope for the Heart

Jump Rope for Heart Week: Bryant/Pattengill students will be participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart Week Thursday, May 28-Monday, June 8. The program encourages community service while reminding students how important it is to make “heart healthy” choices over the summer. Family and friends are welcome to support your child’s volunteering efforts by donating to the American Heart Association. All donations are due by June 8. Click here to join the Bryant team, and click here to join the Pattengill team. You will also find heart healthy resources such as “Ideas on How To Be a Healthy Family.” Questions? Contact Joy Meadows at: Joy.Meadows@heart.org.

Wednesday June 3 is "Wear Red Day" at Bryant for the American Heart Association

Last Day of School Picnic

On Friday June 12, many Bryant classrooms will be celebrating the end of the school year with a cookout. Parents and siblings are welcome to join the fun, starting at 10:00am. Our class was assigned to bring a bag of ice or a bag of hotdog buns. Please return the request form if you are able to donate or volunteer. You can also just send me an email. Thanks to those who have already sent in their forms!

Word Study

We will continue word study during our last three weeks, however students will not have a list and a test on Friday. Students will learn a new way to practice words, called Look/Say/Cover. This is a method many of them will use in second or third grade. During the last two weeks we will also have some fun centers out, like rhyming dominoes and Silly Sentences.

Start Planning for Summer Learning

Your first graders have accomplished so much this year! Avoid summer learning loss by planning for your child to read daily, write frequently, and set aside a few days each week for summer work. Next week, look for a summer work packet and for math journals to come home. Unfinished "Math Boxes" pages in the journals are great for practice and review. We had a visit recently from the Ann Arbor District Library. They have a summer reading game that your student can play online or on paper. Kids get a free book after reaching their goal. Bryant Library is also offering summer check out, see above.

All About Books

Students are writing their facts and beginning illustrations for their books. We will be taking special care to use labels or captions on our drawings because this is an informational book. The class is enjoying exchanging surprising facts about their topics.

Math Update

During our final math unit we will be reviewing and extending many topics from earlier in the year. Students are working on using different strategies to add two digit numbers. Students have also glued their Number Scrolls together and many are on their way to writing numbers to 500 and beyond!
