Definition
Is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis
Cause
Spread through sexual contact (penis-to-vagina or vulva-to-vulva contact) with an infected partner. The parasite can't survive in the mouth or rectum
Symptoms
Women:
- Discomfort during intercourse
- Itching of the inner thigh
- Vaginal discharge (greenish-yellow)
Men:
- Burning after urination or ejaculation
- Discharge from the urethra
Treatment
- The antibiotic metronidazole is commonly used to cure the infection
- Sexual partners should be treated even if they have no symptoms
Prognosis
- With proper treatment, the outcome is likely to be excellent
- Most curable STI
