Definition

Is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis

Cause

Spread through sexual contact (penis-to-vagina or vulva-to-vulva contact) with an infected partner. The parasite can't survive in the mouth or rectum

Symptoms

Women:

  • Discomfort during intercourse
  • Itching of the inner thigh
  • Vaginal discharge (greenish-yellow)

Men:

  • Burning after urination or ejaculation
  • Discharge from the urethra

Treatment

  • The antibiotic metronidazole is commonly used to cure the infection
  • Sexual partners should be treated even if they have no symptoms

Prognosis

  • With proper treatment, the outcome is likely to be excellent
  • Most curable STI
