Newsletter for the Week of October 17th, 2022
Students Return Tuesday, October 18th, 2022
Message rom Mrs. Chavira, Campus Principal
Happy October Rattler Community,
I hope everyone had a restful intersession break. At The Ranch, we have been busy preparing for our second marking period and planning for some great activities as we enter the holiday season. This is the first time in two years that we get to bring back many of our traditions and activities and we are excited to continue to bring our community back to the campus for family events.
This is also a critical time where we have had 9 weeks to work with our students and we begin to create plans of support or acceleration for students. Next week we will be having our Fall Parent Teacher Conference Night where teachers will be able to continue to share with parents and guardians their findings during the first 9 weeks.
I want to take a moment to thank all the families that brought their students to Fall Intersession. We had approximately 180 students join us for our Time for S'mores learning Camp. This allowed teachers to target and strengthen skills and concepts that will help them for Marking Period 2 and continue to close the gap.
Please continue reading our newsletter for important updates and events happening this week. Things you will find below include
- Monster Bash
- Students Recognized on Lexia
- Parent Teacher Conference Night
Thank you for your continued support of Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary and #TEAMSISD.
Respectfully,
Cristina Sanchez-Chavira

Spirit Shirt Update
During the break our vendor delivered the remaining spirit shirt orders. Anyone who ordered an EXTRA SMALL YOUTH shirt will receive a youth small due to the back order of this size. At this time, we have placed all preorders in every classroom to be distributed by the teacher. If you do not receive your order by Thursday, please email our secretary rross01@sisd.net with your email confirmation from your preorder so we can look into the situation. While we hope we have covered all preorders, we must give time to ensure they have all been received. Due to this and the district requirement of submitting some paperwork to sell any extra spirit shirts, a form link will be sent during the week of October 31st in our Rattler newsletter to be able to order any of the extras as well as the specifics on sizes available.
Storybook Parade Announcement
At this time final plans are being made to hold our traditional Storybook Parade on Monday, October 31st in the morning to celebrate literacy. Our students in Kinder-5th grade will walk the parade route located on Paseo del Este (directly in front of the school) with parents invited to line the street. While more details will be released after intersession, we want all our families to be aware of the theme that each grade level has chosen. Students may participate in the theme or come dressed in their own costume. Please note that accessories and masks of any kind are not permitted.

Pedestrian Safety Week
- Always model proper pedestrian safety measures for your children. Cross at crosswalks (even if it is out of our way). Children learn by our behaviors. Modeling improper crossing practices can place them in danger as they may think, it is allowable even when they cross on their own.
- Talk to your child about their path and where they cross.
- Remind them to wait for montors to cross them.
- Remind them to not play with a ball or friends as they are walking home. Balls can roll to the street or friends can push each other into the street.
Attached is a flyer with more information.

What do I do if my child is ill?
SISD Schools are required to follow current isolation protocols which applies to individuals who have symptoms and/or test positive/negative for COVID-19, regardless of vaccination status. They should isolate for a minimum of 5 days and may end isolation if:
Individuals that test NEGATIVE for COVID-19 and may have another illness unrelated to COVID may return to school if.
- After 24 hours WITHOUT fever and or the use of fever reducing medication.
- Show improvement of symptoms.
- And this concern is not related to COVID-19

Students may return to campus if the above applies. It is strongly recommended for the student or staff member to wear a mask for an additional 5-days after their release from isolation from COVID-19 Disease

Attendance Reminders
We know our students will become ill throughout the year. For this reason it is important that when our students are healthy, they are attending school everyday. Lost instructional days do not only impact your child's education but also the education and dynamics of all students in the classroom. For this reason, MAKING EVERYDAY Count is critical for the success of your child and all students on campus.
The state of Texas holds administrators and parents accountable for attending school daily. At 5 absences or tardies, you will be asked to have a meeting with administration to make sure we are working together to educate your child. Please help support our teachers by brining in your children ready to learn. We thank you for making attendance a priority.
It is vital to submit a NOTE, from the doctor or a personal note, for EVERY absence to explain why the child missed school.
You can email all Personal and Doctors Notes to: attendancesueshook@sisd.net
