Weekly Staff Bulletin

February 1-5, 2016

Hello Everyone,

We have officially made it into the second half of our year. Everyone has done so much and Poynter is moving along with tremendous positive energy. Our focus as we round into the second half of our year is rigorous instruction, active student engagement, positive behavior supports and making sure that all students know that middle school matters. You are awesome everyday. Keep up the great work through these next few months.

Have a great week,

Jon and Katie

Coach Corner

Encouraging structured discussion and movement can be a beneficial tool to use within any classroom. A strategy that I have found to be particularly successful is called “Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up.” Within this strategy, a question is posed to the class, followed by a short amount of time to allow the students to ponder the query. When prompted, the students then stand and put their hands up and then match up with another student around the classroom. Once they match up, they high-five and start discussing the question. You could use this as a review by using the questions that are on their Cornell notes or as a way to push kids to the next level with questioning. Check out the video below to watch this strategy in action!

“Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up”
