Formative Assessment Strategies-Exit Slip
Exit Slip-a different twist
Ask students to take out a piece of notebook paper and write a quick note:
1 point of pain (not understanding)
2 questions they still have
3 points they want to remember based on the lesson they just had
Instructional Agility
Her definition of Instructional Agility: "Being instructionally agile means teachers have the capacity to use emerging evidence to make real-time modifications within the context of the expected learning. Whether at the classroom or school level, the true power of assessment comes when emerging results are used to determine what comes next in the learning."
Formative Assessment Key Components
Information from Nicole Dimich Vagle
Accuracy
- Learning progressions or targets (success criteria)are clear.
Feedback
- Teachers listen to students for feedback and respond.
- Teachers provide feedback in the form of probing quesions or comments.
Dialogue
- Assessment conversations "refer to these daily instructional dialogues that embed assessment into an activity already occurring in the classroom...[they} permit teachers to gather information about the status of students' conceptions, mental models, strategies, language use, or communication skills to guide institution" (Ruiz-Primo & Furtack, 2006, p.207''
- Timing matters-both the time allowed to respond to a question posed and the time and pause after a response, if provided. This allows for other students to formulate ideas and build on comments (Wiliam, Lee, Harrision & Black, 2004).
Self-Regulation
- Students use learning criteria and assessment to understand strengths and next steps.
- They reflect on engagement. (What kept me going: What shut me down?)
- They track progress over time.
- They plan and set goals to improve the next time around.
