March 2021
Language Arts
New themes for this month include: Construction Terms, Tools and Machines, I Can Build, and I Can Create. Students will be studying the following phonological awareness skills: blending onset and rime to form a familiar one-syllable word with pictorial support (c-at = cat), blending 2-4 syllables to form a word with pictorial support (ba-by = baby) and separating a normally spoken 4 word sentence into individual words (I - like - to - sing). Students will continue to draw and write words by saying the words slowly so that we can hear the letter sounds that we want to write.
Math
Students will practice counting to 30 and higher. Students will explore shapes by sliding, flipping, moving, and connecting them to make pictures. Students will measure and compare the length of objects. They will continue to subitize amounts to 5 and divide items into equal groups.
Science
Students will study how to use different shapes to construct building and create designs. Students will identify, compare, discuss earth materials and their properties and uses. They will also identify and discuss simple machines found in our daily lives.
Social Studies
Students will discuss tools and items that were created to help people who have special needs. Student will discuss housing as a basic human need.
Talking Points
During Spring Break, you may want to take some time out of each day and review the following concepts with your child: stretching words to write the sounds of the words (c-a-t), counting a pile of objects, counting to 30, rhyming and writing.
Activity
You may want to aside some time for your child to build and create with items around the house. They could also use blocks and legos if they have them. Discuss your child's creation with them. Ask them what they made and what they could add to it or build around it. Try to encourage them to expand their thinking beyond towers and buildings. If possible, have them explain what building they created. Is it a post office, grocery store, police station, or sandwich shop? What detail makes it different than a regular building?
Reminders
- For all students, please review past objectives periodically to make sure that your child has not forgotten them. (Ex. colors, shapes, letter names, letter sounds, numbers, and counting)
- If you are virtual, please make sure your child is watching the videos, answering the questions, and working on the art project.
