Summer Activities

As we approach summer vacation, and while there will be some summer reading and a little math refresher work for our older students, we want to really stress the importance of creating fun and memorable experiences for your children. It's been a challenging year, and the students have been rockstars. They've worn their masks, stayed six feet apart from their friends, sat in desks for the majority of the day. The following link is a great resources for some really great activities that are of little or no cost. Education occurs in all activities, not just reading and math.

Summer Reading

Next fall, we will launch a comprehensive writing program across the curriculum. In order to launch the program, we will be asking all students in grades 5-8 to participate in Summer Reading.

The following novels will need to be completed by all students by August 23, 2021.

Grade 5 - The Hidden Children by Howard Greenfield

Grade 6 - Childtimes: A Three-Generation Memoir by Eloise Greenfield

Grade 7 - I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World by Malala Yousafzai

Grade 8 - Night by Elie Wiesel

If your child/ren are not in these grades, and you want them to take advantage of continuous reading throughout the summer months, please contact your child's teacher for some ideas.

We always encourage baskets of books in the backseat of the car to read while you are on trips either to another state or the grocery store.

No More School Lunches or Bus Service

Please send a lunch with your child/ren the last week of school.

We have yearbooks for sale. Please send in a check for $30 if you would like to purchase one.

Nurse's News

If you have completed any physicals, dental or eye exams for the 2021-22 school year, please send them to the health office at any time.

If your child received daily medications or has an "as needed" medication at school, you received those medication forms for next year in March. You will be able to complete the forms at your doctor's appointment over the summer. Those forms may also be turned in at any time.

Parents/guardians please pick up your medication. Mrs. Haneberg will not be distributing any medication directly to the students.

From Mrs. Haneberg:

I wish everyone a safe and fun filled summer! Thank you for your cooperation and support this year and throughout my time at St. Damian School!

IReady Results

We are quite pleased with this year's growth on our students' IReady scores.

Your child will be bringing his/her scores home within the next week.

We have included a few documents on our website that will help you to understand the scores. Please contact your child's teacher if you'd like to discuss them or have any further questions.

Totus Tuus at St. Damian

The Totus Tuus program aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life. Through evangelization and catechesis, Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to the sacrifices and blessings of the various Christian vocations.

For those already familiar with Totus Tuus, we must share that student volunteers are not permitted this summer as the Archdiocese permits only adult volunteers that have successfully completed background checks/compliance requirements.

That being said - YOU are needed to help us during camps this year at St. Damian! Please contact Mrs. Plesha right away at 708-687-7778 to volunteer.
