April Monthly Memo
As we enter the final 9 weeks of our school year, we are continuing to work hard each day! During the month or March, we kicked off our spring PBL experience with a field trip to a local fire station and it was so fun! Students have learned how to read and understand informational text, such as: recipes, scientific topics, and historical events using text features. In Math, we finished our graphing and data unit. Students enjoyed learning how to survey others and show their results using tally charts, bar/picture graphs, and line plots. April will be a busy month! After spring break, we will MAP test for the final time this school year and visit the Kentucky Horse Park for our final field trip. We will also complete our PBL by finalizing our individual projects. We can't wait to share our learning with you. Please make sure to stay up to date by checking Class Dojo daily!

Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences
Spring Project Based Learning
We are knee deep in our spring PBL! Here are some updates about our project:
- All classes finished the read aloud, I Survived book, "The Great Chicago Fire, 1871." It was an engaging historical fiction story about children who experienced the Chicago Fire and left us with many cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. We were able to visualize, predict, find cause/effect relationships, and reflect through journal writing after many of the chapters!
- We also go to visit a local firehouse and take a tour! We learned about firetrucks, the history of one of our oldest firehouses in Lexington, and learned fire safety tips!
- As a grade level, we analyzed our school evacuation map and determined ways to make it more kid-friendly.
- For our group project, we measured all of the complexes at Dixie using square feet to figure out how far each classroom's escape route is. We found who had the longest and shortest routes in each grade level. We then created new escape maps that we feel students can understand better and will provide a poster to each complex!
- Students have chosen an individual project to complete and are currently working on these: fire activity packet, fire safety book trailers, fire safety text features, and fire safety presentations! Ask your child which project they chose!
Due to a scheduling conflict, our 2nd Grade Expo Night will be rescheduled. We will communicate the date as soon as we have it approved. Thank you for understanding and being flexible!

REMINDERS
MAP Testing:
Students will take their spring MAP test in April. Please make sure your child gets a good night's of sleep and has time to eat breakfast at home or school. On Monday 4/24, students will take the reading test. On Wednesday 4/26, students will take the math test. Teachers will communicate scores after all students have completed the test/at conferences.
Lost and Found: The Lost and Found items will be on display in the cafeteria on the stage for students to check over the next week. If your child is missing any clothing, please encourage them to check this area! All unclaimed items will be donated after Friday, April 21st.
Take-Home Folders:
Please check and empty folders each night!
Please make sure to send your child with a coat each day. Our recess is at 10:30 am and it is usually chilly outside, even in the spring. We want to be able to go outside as much as the weather allows! Thank you!
What We're Learning:
Each week, your child will bring home a paper that is called "What We're Learning." This paper is a resource for you to know what we are working on in reading and how you can help at home! This is not mandatory, but we do encourage you to look over the words with your child and have them read 15-20 minutes nightly.
Breakfast at School:
If your child needs to eat breakfast at school, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. Instruction begins at 7:45 a.m. and we want to make sure they have time to eat before our day begins!
Transportation Changes:
Any transportation changes must be in writing and turned into the front office. Ms. Mullins is in charge of transportation.
