Message from the Principal
Project Explore is an LWIT program based at Moorings Park and is open to adults with disabilities . Students in the program are matched with a mentor and they do everything from preparing meals for residents and doing laundry to working with the physical therapists, leading activities and helping in the business office. The idea is to give the students the opportunity to develop career abilities while cultivating interpersonal skills essential to the workplace. Upon completion from Project Explore some students are able to successfully transition to an on campus LWIT tech program. If you ever have an opportunity, I encourage you to visit Project Explore. You will be amazed at the work that Ann does with the students.
Preparations continue for the Fly-In, Cruise-In. Bob Jackson has secured Wink News to promote the event. John Trierweiler, will be broadcasting live from LWIT starting at 5:45 a.m. Also, check out the English and Spanish promotional videos created by Rick Ponton's class.
Tech Corner
Instructional Strategy - Our learners are often visual in nature and with the increase of multimedia, it is important to keep them visually engaged. Tech Tool Tuesday focused on Thinglink (an interactive image) last week and you can find more information about how to create your own here. In fact, we will continue with Part 2 on Tue, Feb 24th if you are interested in joining us. It also sparked an idea to use Marzano’s #20 Helping Students Revise Knowledge using the Discovery Education SOS strategy, What Did They Say!?!. There are always images that can ignite some prior knowledge, questions, and further content. What could you use in your class? I created a Thinglink where students describe the image and then reflect on their learning based on contributions from others. In this digital tool, students can add text, image URLs, YouTube videos, and websites with the focus on the single image.
Last week, Yolanda shared that some faculty are piloting a new digital tool called Nearpod. We are using the school edition but if you are not part of the pilot group, you can still use the free version. So what is Nearpod? It is a BYOD tool which allows students to follow a teacher’s PowerPoint slide presentation with the added enhancement of built-in assessments, activities, and even note-taking. We are just getting started, but are sharing tips and tricks, pros and cons, etc on this Padlet - please feel free to view/contribute.
