Southview Synopsis

February 2016

Happy New Year!

2016 is in full swing at Southview! Staff and students returned from the two week holiday ready to embrace the new year and all of the exciting learning opportunities and special events in the weeks to come. We trust that you and your family enjoyed some time together over the break.

As we get close to the end of the first term, we would like to remind you that report cards will be coming home at the beginning of March. This is a great point in the year to connect with your child's teacher so please feel free to give them a call at the school. All of our students work hard on a regular basis to demonstrate their curiosity and critical thinking and we are indeed proud of all of their efforts and accomplishments! As a staff, we like to focus on students' effort rather than their ability level. The graphic below shows a number of ways parents and teachers can praise students. These are good messages to share with your child when you receive their report card.

As a staff, we are committed to working with your children to ensure success. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns as home-school partnerships are a very important part of your child's education.

School Year Calendar - Parent Survey

The Limestone District School Board is requesting feedback about the 2015-2016 school year calendar and possible options for the 2016-2017 school year. It would be appreciated if you would please take a moment to respond to several questions on an on-line survey at . If you would like a paper version of the survey, please contact the school and we can send a copy home with your child, or you could come into the school to fill it out. The survey is open for responses until Friday, February 5th. Your input is important to us and we appreciate your time in submitting your feedback and comments. Brain Bike Sponsorship

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Napanee Valley Cruisers for their very generous donation towards the purchase of a Brain Bike! The students are excited to have access to the bike on a daily basis!

Additional PA Day - Monday, February 29, 2016

As a result of the new provincial collective agreement with elementary and secondary teachers an additional PA (Professional Activity) Day has been added to the 2015-16 School Year Calendar. The additional PA day will be Monday, February 29, 2016. As with other mandatory PA days, students do not attend school and, as such, families are responsible for alternate care. The addition of a third PA day to the current school year calendar will not change the number of school days or previously scheduled events for the remainder of the year.

Winter Fun!

The snow has arrived and students are happy to finally have a chance to play outside in the white stuff! Students will be going outside most days for recess throughout the winter unless there are extreme weather conditions. Please make sure your child comes dressed warmly for outdoor play. It is also a good idea to pack extra mittens and socks in your child's backpack. Schools within the Limestone District School Board follow the guidance of KFL&A Public Health. When a cold weather alert or warning is issued, each school will take appropriate precautions that may include keeping children indoors for recess. Generally, if the temperature is forecast to be -25C or -28C with the windchill, children are kept inside. The Principal, however, always has discretion. It's important to note, also, that decisions are made on a case-by-case basis as weather conditions can vary greatly within our district.

Parent Council Update

A huge thank you to our Parent Council for organizing the Craft Sale held before the holiday break! The students had a wonderful timing shopping for gifts and were all smiles as they announced "I have my Christmas shopping done!" We are also very thankful for the purchase of brain bikes; we now have a brain bike in every grade 1 to 8 classroom! Our next meetings will be on Thursday, January 28 and Thursday, February 25 at 6:30 pm. Childcare is available.

Aboriginal Self-Identification

If your child has First Nation, Metis or Inuit ancestry we ask you to consider self-identifying. By doing so you help our school know if we are meeting the needs of our First Nation, Metis and Inuit students. You also assist the school board in getting additional funds to support Aboriginal Education and help us to know where to allocate resources to best support Aboriginal students.

Self-identification will also allow us to direct services and opportunities for First Nation, Metis and Inuit students to your child. These additional services and opportunities may include

· tutoring support,

· access to the board’s elementary and secondary Aboriginal programs,

· access to the Aboriginal Student Support Counsellor,

· access to leadership and university experience camps for Aboriginal students,

· information about scholarships and bursaries for Aboriginal students.

You can find more information and the self-identification form online at our board website.
