Cross Country @RunLikeARoo Update
Your "Running Roos" competed in the Marcus I Cross Country Meet this past Saturday and had several standouts. There was a field of over 3,300 runners from some of the top teams in Texas and surrounding states. Both Austin Christmas and Sadie Tharp ran in the Elite Runner division. Sadie ran a 18:50 which placed her 26th among all female runners. Austin ran a personal best 16:40 that placed him in the top 80 for all male runners. Gina Limon ran a 20.40 that placed her 24th in the Girls Varsity Open division. So proud of these runners!
We will run in another top invitational next Saturday at Southlake Carroll. Best of luck, Cross Country!

Traditions of Weatherford High School
Why are we called the Kangaroos?
Weatherford High has been around for over 100 years. Legend has it that originally the teams of WHS were known as the "Melon Men" because Weatherford (or Parker County) was famed to be the watermelon capital (long before peaches were the thing!). There was a beloved coach at WHS early in the 1900's though, and when he decided to move on up to a college coaching position, the town/school wanted to honor him. So...they renamed the mascot to the Kangaroo, which was the mascot of the college where he went on to coach.
Why is the yearbook called the MelonVine?
The yearbook of Weatherford High has been around for decades. In fact, this year's staff will be creating the 104th volume (yes, number 104!). The MelonVine name again came from Weatherford's watermelon fame. For decades, the yearbook even had a MelonVine Queen!
Why is the student newspaper called the GrassBurr?
The GrassBurr (which is no longer published on paper, but instead is on online newspaper) has been around since the early 1920's. The GrassBurr tagline in the beginning was "The GrassBurr, The Paper With Many Points". There is another publication called the GrassBurr in Texas; it's Tarleton University's yearbook in existence since 1916. We are unclear as to whether our paper was named after Tarleton's. Do you believe it's a coincidence?
Why is the WHS weekly newsletter called The Boomer?
A former teacher, Leslee Cathey, began the WHS Newsletter last year under the leadership of former principal, Kristy Dowd. The newsletter had no clever title, so the journalism students decided that at least one publication should have a name that is related to the Kangaroo mascot. After a little research, it was decided to name the WHS newsletter "The Boomer". A boomer is the dominant male kangaroo in a mob (a group of kangaroos), and the very root word "BOOM" seems to lend a resounding effort to being heard and getting the word out.
WHS is rich in history and traditions, and now you know just a little bit more!
