Principal's Message

Ravinia Families,

Thank you for those that sent sent me a picture of your child's Box Day creations. I'm looking forward to getting many more over break! My own children have asked if they can participate, which we will be doing!

If you choose to spend time next week or over winter break building boxes, we'd love to see your families' creations! Send pictures to Ms. Nordstrom (cnordstrom@nssd112.org), or post them on Twitter and/or Facebook with the hashtags: #RaviniaRocks #BoxDayatHome #112Leads.

As we end this day, month, and near the end of 2020, I hope you all have a wonderful winter break and time with your families away from school. Thank you for all you do as our partners!

With Appreciation,

Courtney Nordstrom, Principal

Virtual Lunch Bunch Opportunity

We will be offering social groups, led by Ravinia staff, twice a week for every grade over the lunch hour beginning January 4. Each session will last 30 minutes. This is an opportunity for students to see their grade level peers and interact socially. Activities will vary by grade and session, and attendance is voluntary and flexible. We encourage students to bring their lunch (or not) and hang out with their peers! We've left plenty of time for a screen free break in the middle of the day as well. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Nurse Communication Reminders: Report ALL Absences

Please inform Nurse Betsy if your child (or someone in your home) tests positive for COVID19, has had close contact with someone who has tested positive, or is sick (including symptoms).

This includes ALL absences - including vacation, appointments, or any other absence. We still need to document these absences during our pivot to remote learning. Ms. Weiss can be reached at: bweiss@nssd112.org or 224-765-3709.

The Lake County Health Department is offering additional mobile testing services during this time. You can view the sites, hours, and more information here.

Book Match: New Reading Opportunity for 4th & 5th Graders Across D112!

Book Match is a fun reading based program that also includes a friendly team competition. 4th and 5th grade students who are interested can sign up and participate with other 112 elementary schools.

Depending on the day you are available, you will meet once a week January - May with coaches based out of Indian Trail, Sherwood, Braeside or Wayne Thomas. Take a risk and meet some new people! Here is the list of books to start reading now. Most are available in all school libraries, the public library, and on Sora. Enjoy this video of the fifty books with summaries. Book Match will run once a week after school or at a lunch hour depending on your day, we'll let you know which coach you'll practice with once we have everyone signed up. Sign up here. For questions contact: kgrost@nssd112.org. Happy Reading!

Due Today! Virtual Coding Club for Grades 4-5 Students

Please fill out this form by Friday, December 18th if your child is interested in participating in Coding Club (Robotics)! This year, we will be completing a variety of lessons in coding, which will take place completely online and through Zoom. We will practice and apply skills that are used in regular years of the robotics program's competitions, but we will not have a competition this year. We will be using curriculum from code.org, which is fully aligned to the Computer Science Teachers' Association Standards (CSTA) for K-5 Students. More information included in the link. ALL Ravinia students in fourth and fifth grade are welcome!

From the Library

Please read over the iRead flier below. You will find that it includes information on how your child can participate this year. The Foundation has been very creative in how to host this event virtually and students are encouraged to read anytime they do not have a synchronous (live) learning session. I am hoping for many more recorded minutes from our students since we are not bound by the normal hours of a school day. One perk of virtual learning. Please note that information from the Foundation is subject to change. Let's get psyched about bringing in another win at Ravinia!

Good Luck,

Mrs. Lau
