Colts Chronicle
Cimarron Middle School Newsletter - April 20, 2018
Colts Chronicle provides information to parents, students, staff, and community.
Principal Notes:
Dear Cimarron Families,
At Cimarron Middle School, teachers and students strive to intentionally focus on relationships and interpersonal connections through our interactions. This can be seen in how we structure our learning environment, plan lessons, and model positive relationships through our teaching and learning. Our focus on relationships allows our school community to thrive. Middle school students navigate the social and emotional aspects of growing into a well rounded individual each day. As students connect with their parents, teachers and community, their growth opportunities increase. Take some time to consider your child's avenues for building and developing relationships that are both meaningful and encouraging to them. As summer approaches, consider supporting your child with getting involved in opportunities that will get them connected with some of the amazing people in our community! Arts, athletics, and recreational opportunities all offer great opportunities for our middle school students to develop meaningful connections with others as they grow into the person they were created to be!
Thursday, April 26th is Take your child to work day. This is a great opportunity to have your student experience some of your accomplishments on a daily basis while they are learning at school. Please click on the link to read more about this opportunity
Have a great three day weekend getting connected to your child and the Parker community.

Vaping
Dear Cimarron Families, Parents & Community, Cimarron Middle School, like most schools across the country, are facing problems created by the popularity and accessibility of alternative smoking devices. The more popular devices at this time seem to be the Vape pens and Juul’s. Over the past several weeks we have seen an increase in the number of incidents involving “vaping” at school. Alternative smoking devices use nicotine and are considered tobacco products. The purchase, possession or use of alternative smoking devices by minors is illegal in Colorado and they are absolutely not allowed in schools. Smoking and use of tobacco products is specifically addressed in the District’s Code of Conduct (Policy JICG). Due to the unique aspects of the devices (odorless, smokeless, “creative” designs), kids are feeling they can vape or use their Juul at school, in restrooms and even in classrooms. Students caught using these products/vaping on school grounds or during school hours will face a 3-5 day out of school suspension and possible expulsion if caught sharing or distributing the device. Additionally, alternative smoking devices pose other dangers and risks to our kids (overheating, exploding batteries, drug based oils, and other potential hazardous toxins). Please take a few minutes to do some research on e-cigarettes, vaping, and Juul products and the laws and health implications involved. The attached weblinks will provide some important information from the U.S. Surgeon General as well from local and national news stations. Thanks for your continued support and involvement.

Wellness Fundraising: In order to meet the staff and student wellness needs of individual teams and departments at CiMS, we will be setting up a wellness grant program for the 2018/19 school year. Immunization
Many immunization updates are necessary by the time school starts in August. During your child's well visit is a great time to check with your primary care provider to update immunizations.
For teenagers, your primary care provider may recommend several immunization series that are not required for school but may be recommended to promote health and wellness for adolescents.
For all students with personal and religious exemptions, parents will need to re-sign the CDPHE exemption form or submit a statement of exemption in August. Please see the DCSD Health Service website and Colorado Tri-County Health/CDPHE immunization websites for more information and for exemption forms.

Stone Canyon Outdoor Adventure Camp
At DCSD’s Stone Canyon, we believe that kids are meant to play outside and that friendships are built around a campfire. We believe that s’mores are a food group, and comfort zones should be stepped out of. We believe that adventure is waiting around every corner, and summer camp is a place where campers can become confident and daring individuals.
DCSD’s Stone Canyon Summer Camp is offering a traditional overnight camp experience for kids ages 9-15 years old. Click the link below to learn about the program, our staff, and the experience your child can have this summer. We still have openings for this summer!
What do we do?
Stone Canyon is a week-long overnight camp owned by Douglas County School District; campers stay with us for seven days and six nights. At Stone Canyon, we create an environment where campers can make friends, learn new skills, and build self-confidence. Through a dedicated staff and a well-crafted program, we aim to provide each camper with an unforgettable experience.
Who are our campers?
Boys and Girls ages 9-15 years old.
9-14-year-old campers are traditional campers, and 15-year-olds are ‘Counselors in Training.’ More information about our counselor in training program can be found on Stone Canyon’s website.
Clubs
Stone Canyon Clubs give campers an opportunity to develop a specific skill set throughout the week. Campers meet with their club Monday through Thursday for two hours a day and the counselors working with each group are knowledgeable and passionate about the skills they are sharing.
We offer 5 different clubs and campers sign up for their club when they register. Our clubs are Team Cuisine, Creative Minds, Outdoor Avengers, Thrill Seekers, and Got Science? For more information about the clubs we offer go to our website stonecanyonedge.org
NOTE: All campers are guaranteed to climb the ropes course, ride the zip line, and take aim in our archery range. Every afternoon we offer 2 blocks of Camper’s Choice. During these activity blocks campers get to choose what activity they want to participate in. We have over 30 activities campers can chose from!
When are the camps?
Session 1: June 17-23th
Session 2: June 24-30th - FULL
Session 3 July 1-7th
Session 4: July 8-14th
What is the cost?
One week of overnight summer camp is $900. To reserve your camper’s spot we ask for a deposit of $225 and the remaining balance is due one week before your child attends camp.
