Sacagawea
The Story Of A Native American Girl
Early Life
Sacagawea was born on Shoshone Island in May 1788. She lived 200 years ago and this is how it started.
Her village sat in the harsh rocky mountains. Sacagawea did pottery to use as a time killer. She and her tribe LOVED horses, every now and then other tribe members would steal her tribe's horses. Sacagawea moved a lot in the winter because their food supply was low. In most tribes Sacagawea's name meant ¨Bird Woman¨. Sacagawea had no sister, but she had a brother named Cameahwait. In the
summer
Sacagawea tried to harvest corn, squash, beans, and turnips. Shoshone Indians hunted buffalo, wild sheep, salmon, and squirrel. Sacagawea was kidnapped when she was 12 by Hidatsa warriors. Her newhut
was along the Knife River. She was married to a fur trader named Toussaint Charbonneau at the age of 15. Charbonneau was a French interpreter. Her new tribe grew crops, traded fur, and spoke in a different language. In 1805, Sacagawea gave life to a little boy named Jean Baptiste or Pomp for short. April 7, 1805, Sacagawea and her newborn baby left the camp to join Lewis and Clark. Surprisingly when they were trading horses Sacagawea, realized that the chief was her brother. But the journey had to continue so they said their goodbyes and left. Along the way, Pomp had a terrible fever. Clark tried everything to save him. He even made cream out of bear fat. Soon the little boy was well again. When the trip was over and everyone was heading back, Clark asked to adopt Pomp, but Sacagawea said no. In 1809, Sacagawea moved to Missouri. Lastly, Sacagawea died on December 20, 1812, of a bad fever. Why She Is Famous

Courage and Dreams
Sacagawea loved to walk in the river banks to cool off her feet. One time a gust of wind tipped the boat over Charbonneau panicked and let the boxes of supplies slip into the water but Sacagawea showed her courage when she slid over the boat and grabbed the boxes out of the water. Sacagawea's dream was to see the Pacific Ocean.I picked this person because if she didn't help out then I would not be here.
