GMS Principal's Corner
December 5, 2021
Dear Galvin Families,
We hope everyone enjoyed the break last week. December is a very busy and productive month. Students continue to be engaged in their classes, and there are many activities taking place here at the Galvin. Student Leaders are planning GMS Spirit Weeks for later this month. Our robotics team has been practicing all week in preparation for their first competition this weekend, and our Holiday Concert for grades 7 & 8 is Wednesday, December 15th at Canton High School. It's great to see the various talents of our students shine both in and out of the classroom.
Thank you,
GMS Administration

Students Walking Home
Substitute Teachers
Do you have a college-age child coming home for winter break? If so, would they be interested in subbing for the Canton Public Schools while they are here? Subbing is a great way to keep busy, make money and get real-world work experience. In Canton, we have had great success bringing our own, former students back to help support our students and schools during this busy time year. If your child is interested, please have them fill out this sub application packet and email it to Kim Eardley (eardleyk@cantonma.org) to get the process started. If they fill it out before they get home, the process can begin asap!
Students in their first year of college are able to sub at the elementary and preschool levels only.
Students in their second year or beyond can sub at all school levels.
Cross Country
The cross country season closed with members of the team gathering for the awards banquet.

The Ideal Middle School
How can we, as a design team, create an environment that is more learner-centered? As the middle school anxiously awaits a decision by the MSBA (Mass School Building Authority) about the future of the GMS facility, our 6th grade students are tackling the question in their next PBL unit.
Just recently our students were presented with this challenge: Have you heard? Canton is in the running to get a brand new school, and we need your help! Together, in teams of 3 to 4, you will research the latest trends in school design to promote collaborative classrooms where students are at the center. To help influence what the future could be, you and your team will create a blueprint of your design, showcasing what you want it to look like, and sharing to members of the community your ideas.
As they do their work, they will address math, reading and science standards as well as the desired student outcomes of perseverance and curiosity. We can't wait to show both our school and town communities what our ideal learning communities can look like but also the MSBA!

Our GMS Diversity Equity and Inclusion Team Needs You
The Galvin is creating its first, official, DEI team. The team will build upon the work our inaugural equity team started and is looking for staff who are interested in being a part of the team as we do the ongoing work of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion at the GMS. We are looking for 2-3 parents/guardians to be members of our team and, in time, we will begin to include students as well.
The meetings will be held after school, approximately every 3 weeks for 1 hour. Our first meeting will be held Thursday, December 16 from 2:30 - 3:30. We will establish dates for after the New Year at that meeting.
If you are interested in being a part of this team or want to learn more about the GMS DEI team, please email Mrs. Shannon at shannons@cantonma.org.
