GMS Principal's Corner

December 5, 2021

Dear Galvin Families,

We hope everyone enjoyed the break last week. December is a very busy and productive month. Students continue to be engaged in their classes, and there are many activities taking place here at the Galvin. Student Leaders are planning GMS Spirit Weeks for later this month. Our robotics team has been practicing all week in preparation for their first competition this weekend, and our Holiday Concert for grades 7 & 8 is Wednesday, December 15th at Canton High School. It's great to see the various talents of our students shine both in and out of the classroom.

Thank you,

GMS Administration

Lunch Rotation

As in past years, we are rotating lunches during the school year. Our next lunch rotation begins on Monday, December 6th. The new lunch times are as follows:

Grade 8 - 1st Lunch 11:30 - 11:55

Grade 6 - 2nd Lunch 11:58 - 12:23

Grade 7 - 3rd Lunch 12:25 - 12:51

Students received updated schedules on Friday during X-Block reflecting the new lunch times. Also, students will continue to enjoy lunch outdoors weather permitting.

Chromebooks: Important Reminder

It is our students' responsibility to bring their charged Chromebook to school with them each day. We have a very limited number of loaners available and are using those to first support students who's Chromebooks aren't working. The Chromebook is an essential, daily, school supply. Please help your child come up with a process that allows them to have their device ready for school each day. Thank you.

Students Walking Home

As a reminder to children walking home, you must use a crosswalk to cross the street. Please do not cross outside a crosswalk. Please also get assistance from a crossing guard or the GMS SRO, Mike Brady, to cross.

Substitute Teachers

Do you have a college-age child coming home for winter break? If so, would they be interested in subbing for the Canton Public Schools while they are here? Subbing is a great way to keep busy, make money and get real-world work experience. In Canton, we have had great success bringing our own, former students back to help support our students and schools during this busy time year. If your child is interested, please have them fill out this sub application packet and email it to Kim Eardley ( to get the process started. If they fill it out before they get home, the process can begin asap!

Students in their first year of college are able to sub at the elementary and preschool levels only.

Students in their second year or beyond can sub at all school levels.

The Ideal Middle School

How can we, as a design team, create an environment that is more learner-centered? As the middle school anxiously awaits a decision by the MSBA (Mass School Building Authority) about the future of the GMS facility, our 6th grade students are tackling the question in their next PBL unit.

Just recently our students were presented with this challenge: Have you heard? Canton is in the running to get a brand new school, and we need your help! Together, in teams of 3 to 4, you will research the latest trends in school design to promote collaborative classrooms where students are at the center. To help influence what the future could be, you and your team will create a blueprint of your design, showcasing what you want it to look like, and sharing to members of the community your ideas.

As they do their work, they will address math, reading and science standards as well as the desired student outcomes of perseverance and curiosity. We can't wait to show both our school and town communities what our ideal learning communities can look like but also the MSBA!

7th & 8th Grade Winter Concert

The GMS 7th and 8th Grade Winter Concert will be held Wednesday evening December 15th at 7:00 pm at the Canton High School Auditorium. The Concert will feature performances by the 7th and 8th Grade Bands, the 7th and 8th Grade Chorus and the 7th and 8th Grade Orchestra. The 6th Grade Winter Concert is scheduled for January 18th.

We previously shared with families an electronic copy of the GMS Student and Family Handbook with the District Appendix. This Handbook is also posted on our school website. The link to this handbook can be found here: Approved GMS Handbook with Appendix.

It is the responsibility of each family to review the Handbook together and to fill out the 2021-22 Canton Public Schools Student/Family Handbook and Permissions Signature Page. The link to the Google Form can be found here. Please ☑ each section and electronically sign this form as receipt and agreement as stated below. We ask that you complete this form for each child you have at the Galvin.

We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Our GMS Diversity Equity and Inclusion Team Needs You

The Galvin is creating its first, official, DEI team. The team will build upon the work our inaugural equity team started and is looking for staff who are interested in being a part of the team as we do the ongoing work of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion at the GMS. We are looking for 2-3 parents/guardians to be members of our team and, in time, we will begin to include students as well.

The meetings will be held after school, approximately every 3 weeks for 1 hour. Our first meeting will be held Thursday, December 16 from 2:30 - 3:30. We will establish dates for after the New Year at that meeting.

If you are interested in being a part of this team or want to learn more about the GMS DEI team, please email Mrs. Shannon at

Lost & Found

If any student has misplaced a sweatshirt, water bottle, or other item, the lost and found table is located on the first floor. Please ask your child to stop by and retrieve any lost items.

Community Connections

The Canton Public Library's Homework Center began Monday November 29th in the library Community Room. This program is offered to Canton middle school and high school aged residents. Our mission is to both alleviate school-related stress and to promote a sense of community among Canton students. Teen and tween residents will have access to free tutoring and homework help and also volunteer to tutor others.

The Homework Center will meet on a variety of days and times to accommodate as many schedules as possible. Please check the library’s Event Calendar for specific meeting times. Any adults or teenagers with tutoring experience or excellent academic records can apply to volunteer by visiting the Canton Public Library website and clicking on “Volunteer to Tutor.”
