PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Rock Creek Families,

It's hard to believe that June is just around the corner. It has certainly been a year that will stay in our memories for a very long time. We continue to be incredibly proud of our RC Rockets-- their ability to be flexible and grow is so impressive.

I want to share with you this article from The Atlantic (shared by a friend of mine). It is an excellent reminder of the power of our language, the belief we have in each child and the importance of seeing each child as brilliant every day. Although this article is written for educators, it also has a great message for parents. As we all know, parents are a child's first teacher!

The author Ron Berger writes: If students know that teachers value and believe in them, no matter what they have gone through over the past year, educators can create a classroom environment where high expectations are the norm. When students feel empowered, they care more and work harder. Next time you hear the phrase learning loss, think about whether we really want to define our students by their deficits instead of their potential. These are things to think about and engage with students and we close out this year and plan for the next.

Wishing you a wonderful day,

Tiffany

I will be sending out overdue notices every week through the end of the year so that you know what books need to come back.

Discard books are yours to keep, they are books that have been well used and replaced with new books. When you are done with them, please pass them on to someone else to read.

PARENTSQUARE

The Beaverton School District is very excited to be adopting a new and improved platform for communication. Beginning July 1, we’ll be transitioning to a product called ParentSquare to keep families better informed. ParentSquare will replace SchoolMessenger and any other texting/messaging apps like Remind or Talking Points that individual schools and teachers may be using. It will not replace ParentVUE, StudentVUE, Canvas or Seesaw.

ParentSquare provides a safe way for administrators, teachers, staff and parents to:

  • Send and receive district, school and class information in your preferred language
  • Share pictures and files
  • See calendar items
  • Sign up for conferences
  • And much more… all in one place!

ParentSquare Parent Videos

Padres — Introducción a ParentSquare

District, school, grade level and classroom information will be sent to your computer and/or phone via email and/or text. Or you can download the free iOS or Android app.

ParentSquare has a familiar design, similar to a social media feed. Families will only receive notifications that are relevant to their students. In addition to district- and school-wide messaging, teachers and staff will have access to two-way messaging with real-time translation. Families will be able to receive and send information in their chosen languages.

You don’t need to take any action to receive emails, texts or phone calls prior to the July 1 launch. Our student information system will sync contact information directly with ParentSquare. If you’d prefer to use the app, simply download it from the app store on or after July 1 and follow the prompts.

To learn more about ParentSquare, visit our webpage: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/parentsquare

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.

OREGON APPROVED FOR P-EBT

Oregon Approved for P-EBT

The State of Oregon received approval from the federal government to issue Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) for the 2020-21 school year. Oregon was approved to provide retroactive food benefits to eligible students for the 2020-21 school year. The P-EBT benefits are expected to be issued beginning in July.

All students and children (ages 1-18) will continue to receive free meals through June 30, regardless of Meal Benefits eligibility. If you wish to receive P-EBT money in addition to food, please visit the Pandemic EBT webpage to see if your family qualifies. Qualifying for free or reduced meals for the 2020-21 school year before June 30 will ensure that you receive P-EBT when the benefits are issued.

If you have questions, call 503-356-3957 or email NS-MealBenefits@beaverton.k12.or.us.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION

Please call the 24 hour attendance line 503-356-2451 or email both Jessica_vogel@beaverton.k12.or.us and Diana_carter@beaverton.k12.or.us if your student is going to be absent for hybrid or CDL. Teachers don't always have time to check their email and notify the office before attendance calls go out. When leaving messages please list the reason for the absence and symptoms of any illness.

If an in person hybrid student is not physically present during in person instruction time, they are marked absent and are not eligible to participate with CDL afternoon class. The only exceptions to this is if a student is out due to a rare long-term occurrence i.e...out due to quarantine, Covid 19, broken leg etc. Parents will need to contact the principal and school nurse if these circumstances arise. In person hybrid students that are on vacation are not eligible to switch to CDL, they will be marked absent.

RENT ASSISTANCE

The Oregon eviction protections are set to expire at the end of June. This means renters will need to pay back rent that's still due. The state will start taking applications today 5/18/21, for additional rental assistance through the Oregon Emergency Rent Assistance Program. People are eligible if at least one person in the household had a financial impact from the pandemic (a lost job, decrease in income), and their household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income (about $77,000 for a family of 4 in the Portland metro, or $51,000 in rural communities).

Tenants can be approved for up to 12 months of past-due rent, and three months' upcoming rent. The payments will go directly to landlords, property owners, and utility companies.

The money will be allocated based on need, so everyone who applies for the program will go through a review process.

Assistance is offered to all renters, regardless of citizenship or immigration status.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

Beaverton Safe Routes to School Parent Surveys

It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of the program is to make walking and rolling to school safe, convenient, and fun.

Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.

The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be combined with classroom tallies to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.

The school’s survey will be open for responses for three weeks starting May 1st.

We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.

Thank you,

Leah Biado-Luis

Beaverton Safe Routes to School Coordinator
