Guidance
As part of West Elementary Guidance we have been discussing the difference between being a reporter and a tattler. Please ask your child about the difference and this a great fun read that we did in 1st grade.
Bumblebee Preschool Classroom at Stepping Stones ELC
During the month of October we studied about trees. We talked about what makes trees grow, how trees change, food and other things that come from trees, and parts of trees. We went on a tree hunt to collect beautiful leaves, twigs, branches and bark. We brought our collection back to our classroom to investigate. The students painted branches and created their own trees. The picture is of a gigantic branch the PM class found and demanded we bring it back to our classroom.

7th Grade Field Trip
You never know what you are going to get for weather when you schedule an outdoor field trip for the month of October, but you can be sure when you work with Knoxville’s community members to create real-world learning experiences, the day will be great! Despite the forty degree high temperature, KMS 7th graders enjoyed all of the learning they could in regards to a variety of important topics.
7th graders learned:
where our drinking water comes from and how it is processed
where our wastewater ends up and how it is recycled
the differences between a landfill and a dump
why pollinators are important to us and how we can prevent their extinction
a variety of farming practices to preserve soil and prevent run-off into lakes and streams
how the DNR works for the public and on behalf of animals in the state of Iowa
about how the type of skin and fur on an animal is perfectly suited to their job in nature
the benefits and drawbacks of an animal having binocular or monocular vision
As always, we are grateful to our local municipalities and businesses for hosting this impactful day of learning. As you will be able to see in the shared photos- the kids had a super time!
Since the day of the trip, students have been encouraged to express their learning by communicating with a grandparent or sending a letter of thanks to the site leader! Please enjoy some samples of student work below.
