We did it!!!

It's been so wonderful getting to know the students this week. I can already tell that it's going to be a fun year. Below, you will find some tidbits about the classroom and how I plan to run things this year. Don't worry ~ The newsletters will not be this long normally and will have more pictures!

Special's Schedule

Monday - P.E., Music

Tuesday - Art

Wednesday - Library, P.E.

Thursday - Music, Computer Lab

Friday - P.E., Life Skills (every other week)

Homework

Students will begin having homework next week but don't worry, it's not too much! I'd like them to read for 20 minutes each night. I'll put a log in their take home folder for you to fill in each night. I will also send a book that is at their end-of-year kindergarten running record level. You can use this book if you'd like but certainly don't have to. We will be testing children in the next few weeks to see where they are reading-wise after the break and adjust from there. They will also have an optional math worksheet. This is to review the skill we did in class that day. The students can bring it back to school but it is not required. I'll assume that you spent some time practicing with them so the concept is further enforced.

Positive Reinforcement

Our school is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) School of Merit. That basically means we try to focus on the positive rather than the negative. However, we also know that negative behaviors happen and will need to be dealt with (see behavior log below). Students earn tokens for desired behaviors and I am the token queen! I already have students with over 30 tokens and school's just started!! I try to "catch" them doing as many good things as I can in the course of the day!

Behavior Log

The students will bring home their behavior log each night. This week, the students filled it out but starting today, I will be filling it out. It's a wonderful way to keep communication between us strong and I want to make sure you know what's happening here at school. A circled behavior in the log means that I have given the students 4 opportunities to correct the behavior but they have not been able to. I will follow up the circled behavior with an email so you know more about what happened. Please sign the log each night so I know you saw it. Your child will get a token for making sure you signed it!!

Writing Notebook

We will be working toward 'living the life of a writer'. One of the ways we do this is to keep a writer's notebook. Our writer's notebook is a collection of our thoughts, ideas, words and questions. We use them to help write stories or to record our thinking and learning. I will be giving the kids some time to decorate their writer's notebook cover at school. Please help your child collect pictures, words or other interesting things that represent them and send them to school by Thursday, September 10th. I also ask that you send in copies of pictures as they will be cut up and glued onto the notebook. You will find an envelope in your child's folder today. Put anything you've found in there!! Thanks so much!

Field Trip to Barkhausen on October 7th

I wanted to include our October field trip nice and early because some of you may not be aware of our volunteer approved chaperone policy. Parents wishing to go on field trips MUST have an approved chaperone background check done in order to ride the bus with us or have a group of students. If you choose to drive and meet us there, you do not need to do this and you will NOT be assigned a group of students. It takes a good couple of weeks to get the background checks back so please send yours in early if you are thinking about being a chaperone.

This was the note/link that went out in the Forest Glen newsletter this week:

In order to participate in school activities such as, but not exclusively, chaperoning field trips, working as a PTO volunteer, attending multiple classroom activites, or going on the playground with your child at lunch you need a volunteer profile set up as well as a criminal background check successfully completed! Click here to start the process!

If you already have been approved as a volunteer at Forest Glen have you........

· modified your volunteer profile on our volunteer web page lately?

· updated the school you want to volunteer for?

· updated your email address?

· checked our volunteer web page for new volunteer opportunities?

If not…click here to do so!
