Using online images for personal use is perfectly safe and legal if you follow these guidelines. Attribution is used to give a person credit if you use their image. Since you are giving them credit, you are allowed to use their image for your use. You are also allowed to use it due to fair use purposes. This means that the image can be used for short term purposes such as a project or proving a point. Some images are in publice domain which means everyone can use them. Images such as these may belong to website's with free images. These websites have images you can use and all the images they have are free to the public.
