Big picture

PENN PRIDE: we have. we are.

Students: We really enjoyed the opportunity for some outdoor recess this week. :) And, each class spent at least an hour having fun with unstructured and unplugged play. No devices, no batteries .... just imagination and creativity and interaction. We also completed another bracket for Book Madness. Next week we will have one "shining moment" to learn which book is the champion.

Staff: This week we spent our Thursday afternoon reflecting on how we are implementing PBIS and preparing for the new version of Iowa Assessments or you may have known it as Iowa Test of Basic Skills. This year we will use a brand new version. It is call Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress or ISASP for short. The big changes are that it is entirely online. It is un-timed and focuses on Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Math. Only 5th graders take a Science test. Only 3rd - 6th graders take this assessment. We will be doing this the week of April 8 - 11. Of course, we'll share more info as the dates get closer.

Carline Mantras

Here are 3 ways you can help keep kids safe and the carline efficient:

Many parents like to arrive at school early for pick up. And that is fine. However, you must either be in the curbside lane or in a parking spot. Please do not just sit in the moving lane before school is dismissed. The Moving Line of the Car Line has to Keep Moving

Also, both before and after school, please think: PULL as FAR FORWARD as you can. This helps us use all the space we have

In the drive between the school and the park, if you are waiting on the school side lane, you need to be going the correct direction (east) just like on a city street.

Looking for all incoming kindergartners

We did have kindergarten registration last week, but suspect that there are more children in our neighborhoods that have not registered. If you know someone with a child who will go to kindergarten next year, please encourage them to call the office so we can get them registered. We want them to be able to attend Kindergarten Round-up.

Mark your calendars for May 3, 5:30 - 7:00

Tell Your Story Open House

Parent Teacher Conferences ... we're still working toward 100%

We believe in 100% participation in Parent Teacher Conferences because we want to hear your insights about your child's learning. We also want every child to know that their parent/guardian and teacher took the time to talk about him/her. Kids actually love that. And, they're worth the time. So, if you haven't made a conference time yet, it is not too late. You can contact your child's teacher or call the office for help getting a time set up. Or, Mrs. Heffner will be making contacts next week to make this conversation possible between you and your child's teacher.

We're still ROLLING!

Roller skating in PE.

When: March 4th - March 15th

For: Students in grades 2 - 6

Time: During PE classes

Other Info: Safety Gear/Socks

1) Students in grades 2-3 as well as any other student that feel wearing their bike helmet as well as knee or elbow pads are encouraged to bring those to school on the days they have PE.

2) Please be sure your child has on socks for the days we roller skate. Wearing longer & thicker socks may help too with blisters. :)

Also a HUGE thank you to our wonderful PTO for funding this very popular unit. We are one of the only schools in the ICCSD district that roller skate and our kiddos just love it. We are so fortunate to have such a great PTO!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at school.

Book Madness -- a bracket involving books instead of a basketball

We are excited to bring march madness and the love of books together. Each week we will have guest readers share a bit of their own life story and then read a book aloud. Student voting will move books through the bracket. We started with 16 "sweet" books. Which one will be the ultimate champion book of the Year? Now we're down to the championship reading. Ask your child which book they are rooting for.

Please be sure to check the Attendance Area Look-Up link above to determine if changes to the elementary boundaries have affected your student.

Giving input on next year's classroom assignment

We typically start sharing a parent information/request form with parents right after spring break. However, this year, we are delaying this process -- namely because of the huge transitions we're making. Parents will have the opportunity to give input, but I don't expect to be asking for that feedback for awhile. Keep reading this newsletter for information.
