St. Mary's Preschool and Elementary School

What a Great Week!

St. Mary's finished our first full week of school yesterday and that deserved a treat! The ice cream truck visited us on Friday afternoon, not only providing a cool treat on a hot day, but also reminding us of Father Brian's homily on Friday morning. Father Brian visited with us about making sure we are prepared and ready, that our backpacks and bags are packed to meet the challenge of each day and in preparation to meet Christ. Father Brian used the analogy of hearing an ice cream truck and how children usually start running towards the music in anticipation of the treat, whether they are prepared with money in their pocket or not. This comparison helps us to remember to we must be ready to not only meet Christ, but to continue to do His work...running in anticipation of His great love for us. Ending the day with a visit from the ice cream truck was the perfect way to tie in Father Brian's homily and end the week with a celebration.

Charity Dress Day

September is right around the corner and I know it will be a fun and busy month for us! Our first Charity Dress Day of the school year is this Wednesday, September 1st. For those families who are new to our school, once a month Home and School sponsors Charity Dress Day to support local and national charities. Students, faculty, and staff members participate by donating a minimum of $1.00 in return for having a free dress day and not wearing a school uniform to school that day. Money raised in September will benefit the Joplin Humane Society and all that they do to care for our furry friends as they look for a new home. Charity Dress days are usually the first Wednesday of each month and are always a fun source of competition between classes to see which class can raise the most money and receive a special treat for their efforts.

St. Mary's Family Movie Night

Make plans to join us on Saturday, September 18 for a fun evening at the movies, right here at St. Mary's! A private benefactor has provided for a company from Kansas City to set up a 20' x 21' foot big screen on St. Mary's back playground for our first annual St. Mary's Movie Night. Families can spread out on our grassy area behind the school with lawn chairs, and may also bring snacks to enjoy. Please stay tuned for more information, but you won't want to miss this fun, family-friendly event, it will really lift you UP!

Upcoming VIRTUS Training

Sister Joan will be holding two VIRTUS training sessions at St. Mary's in September, offering two different times so parents and volunteers may choose a time that works best for their schedule. The first training is scheduled on Tuesday, September 21 from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. After School Care will be provided free of charge this day for any parents attending the training. Thursday, September 29 is the second training from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m., both sessions being held in St. Mary's Parish Hall. As a reminder, VIRTUS training is required for all school volunteers. Online training is also still available at www.virtusonline.org. Please call the school office if you have any questions or need help getting registered. St. Mary's is a part of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese, which you will need to select from the pull-down option when starting the online registration process.

Elementary Playground Update

Exciting things are happening with the elementary playground! Your child may have told you that the playground area is under construction and closed at the moment, but it should be open for playing this week! A new concrete pad has been poured (bye bye, mulch!) and this weekend a crew is on campus pouring a new rubberized play surface for safety. The pour-in-play surface needs 28 hours after installation to cure/set which means the playground will be open to students on Tuesday. Hooray! In addition, new benches, picnic tables, and equipment will help this area be even more fun for our students. Special thanks to St. Mary's Knights of Columbus and other volunteers who have helped with this project, our school is so blessed by their help, guidance, and support. Thank you, Knights and volunteers!

Home and School News

St. Mary's Home and School will kick of the school year with a Meet and Greet on Tuesday, September 2 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the St. Mary's Parish Hall and is a great way to learn about all the wonderful things Home and School does to support our school community. We will be planning the upcoming school year, discussing volunteer opportunities, and working on forming committees. Not only does attending Home and School meetings count towards Care and Share hours, parents/grandparents attending earn a Free Dress Pass for their child to use in the coming month! St. Mary's Home and School is open to all St. Mary's parents, grandparents, and school supporters.
