Woodstone Library
Riders are Readers
Our Elf on the Shelf is Back!
Last year, Seuss, made his appearance at the Woodstone Library and many students enjoyed guessing the books that he read the night before. Well this year, Seuss has changed it up on us. Each night he is visiting a NONFICTION section of the library and leaving us a clue to which section he visiting. He wants the students to look up the call number of the book and enter it on the Library Libguide Elf Page for a chance to win a book. Click on the link above for more details and information about how to look up the nonfiction section.

Last Year's Harry Potter Clue
Last year, Seuss left us clues to picture and chapter books he read at night when it was all quiet in the library.
Night 1
This year Seuss is reading nonfiction at night and leaving us clues about the topic.
Night 3

November Recap
Kate Klise was a huge hit when she visited on November 6. The students really loved seeing pictures of her when she was little and she gave them great strategies for how to write stories. Kinder, 1st and 2nd graders came for their weekly lessons. 3rd graders received some research mini-lessons to get ready for their big research project in January and 5th grade participated in Energy Makerspaces.
1st Grade Water Research
1st graders used PebbleGo to research water habitats and what animals live in each one.
3rd Grade Questions and Keywords Mini-Lesson
3rd graders came to the library for 3 mini-research lessons: questions and keyword, text features, and taking notes and paraphrasing. Here they are using the SmartBoard to sort relevant and irrelevant questions.
5th Grade Energy Makerspaces
5th graders came 2 or 3 times to participate in Energy Makerspaces. They were given tasks and materials and had to try to perform the task using only what they had on hand. There were 8 different stations they could chose from relating to sound, light, kinetic, mechanical and electric energy. The students had to make a video explaining what they did for each task. Read Mrs. Romine's blog post about it here.
Makerspaces
Makerspaces are just what they sound like... a space for kids to "make" things. A place for students to use their own knowledge and ideas to construct. I showed the 5th graders this poster before we started because I think it is a great representation of what I was expecting them to do. I hope to be able to do more makerspaces throughout the year. Thanks to everyone who donated boxes, paper rolls, buttons, etc.
In our makerspace, each station had a task related to energy.
1. Build a Pom-Pom Launcher
2. Make a Marble Run
3. Construct a Light Maze
4. Build a telephone
5. Invent a Musical Instrument
6. Make a Lego car that moves using a rubberband
7. Create a drawing tool
8. Make a Brush-Bot (a tooth brush robot)
I wrote on my blog about one of my favorite experiences with this makerspace and the creativity that it allowed our students. Check it out here.
