A Note from Mr. Lindner and Mrs. Kader:
Good Afternoon, Orchard Lane families!
We can't believe it has been nearly SIX months since our first "MEET THE PRINCIPALS" session. Wow. Time is really flying. Now we are looking forward to sitting down with our families once again. So many wonderful things have been happening here, but the one thing we are really missing is the chance to have our families come into our school and learn more about what their children are doing. To help keep us all connected, we are hoping that families use this Google Form to submit any questions that they would like to see us address during our "live" meet and greet session on Wednesday March 10th at 6pm.
This week we highlighted some very important people and a couple of important events as part of our study in Black History and our country’s Civil Rights Movement.
Jackie Robinson - Jackie Robinson is best known for breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball on April 15, 1947 when he played 1st base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. In a time where it was widely believed that African Americans should have a separate league, Jackie showed he could be an influential ambassador for equal access to Major League Baseball for all players based on their ability...not the color of their skin. Jackie won the very first Rookie of the Year award in 1947 and he was also a six-time All Star. Jackie was also the first African American player to win the National League MVP in 1949. To this day, all MLB players wear the number 42 on April 15th.
Katherine Johnson - Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician who just passed away a year ago at the age of 91. Katherine was hand picked to be one of three African Americans to join West Virginia University when it integrated in 1939. Katherine Johnson may be best known for her role in NASA’s mission to have astronaut John Glenn orbit the Earth in the early 60’s. When faced with uncertainty from the VERY expensive computer systems, John Glenn famously said, “Go get the girl. If she says they’re good then I’m ready to go.” Katherine Johnson’s role in the NASA space program was the subject of the book and movie, Hidden Figures.
Barack Obama - Barack Obama enrolled in Harvard Law School in 1988 and became the first African-American President of the Harvard Law Review. Barack Obama made history by being elected as the first African-American President of the United States in 2009. He was later named the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. President Obama’s landmark legislation around health care was called the Affordable Care Act...often referred to as “Obamacare”.

Parent University Lecture Series: Calm Parents, Calm Kids: Managing Your Own Reactivity (Virtual)
Tuesday, March 23, 6:00 - 7:00 pm
Presented by: Growing Minds Inc.
Though your body doesn't speak to you when stressed, it does send ongoing signals in the form of feelings and sensations. Noticing those feelings can soften them, allowing you to move beyond the stress. Consistently modeling the mindful behavior you wish to see in your children produces ripple effects that will benefit your entire family. Learn to identify and document your stress signature so that when you feel strong emotions inhibiting your wellbeing, you can "name them to tame them".

Taking Care of Yourself- In these stressful times, one of the most important things we can do for our children is to take care of ourselves. Take a look at this resource. I think the Relaxation Training video is particularly helpful.
