The Copeland PTO Newsletter

President's Corner by Karen Thomas

I hope you all had a very fun and restful Spring Break! Can you believe we only have about 2 ½ months left in this school year!! Man, did that go by fast! As usual we are busy at work here at Copeland! This Saturday, March 23rd will be our Mom and Son Ultimate we hope to see all our moms and sons out there ready to compete!!

This is the time of year when we start thinking about next year and filling our open chairman positions and board positions. Copeland has something for everyone and WE NEED YOU!!! Please take a look at the open positions that we have and consider taking a step up or even into the volunteer world at Copeland. Copeland is a fabulous school, but we are only as fabulous as our volunteers make us!! We need help with the following positions.

Open Chairman Positions:

Colonial Day – (usually a 5th or 4th grade parent) 5thgrade travels back in time to learn how people lived in the colonial days. The kids learn to make candles, go to a typical colonial day of school, learn games, see Benjamin Franklin and many other things. Chairman will recruit volunteers to run each station and work with teachers on layout for the day.

Co-Chair Spirit Wear – Co-Chairman works with chairman to organizes t-shirt sales and distribution. Duties include communication with vendor, keeping track of supply, processing of orders, distribution of purchases and ordering dates.

Co-Chair Treasurer – You will work with the PTO Executive Board Treasurer learning the ins and outs of how the books are done and what is all needed in the treasurer position. The objective is for the candidate to move into the roll of Treasurer on the PTO Executive Board once the position comes available.

Grade Level Liaison (5th grade only) - Liaisons are responsible for coordinating and overseeing their respective grade level activities and reporting progress to the VIPS Coordinator. Liaisons are encouraged to attend the activities, which include grade 5th grade recognition meetings, Fun Day, Field Days, etc.

Memory Book for 5th grade – this is a special sort of through the years book for our 5th graders. They talk about their favorite memories at Copeland, favorite teachers, and we get to see their Elementary career in pictures from Kinder through 5th grade. We need someone to help organize this. (a 5th grade parent is requested).

Minor Fundraising - Chairman will work with PTO Executive Board Fundraising Coordinator investigating fundraising ideas and working with vendors to get spirit nights setup

3rd Grade Multi-Cultural Day – Chairman helps organize multi-cultural day which consists of the kids traveling the world to explore food, traditions & games of other countries. Several volunteering opportunities needed from helping in a class room on that day to donating an item.

PE Chair – Chairman works with PE coaches to organize field day and special projects as needed

Spirit Cart - Co-Chairmen run and operate our Spirit Cart. Duties include selecting and ordering merchandise to be sold at Spirit Cart, scheduling volunteers to help work on Spirit Cart days, providing a current price list and assisting with the counting of money collected at Spirit Cart.

Open Board Positions:

As always thank you all for all that you do and for keeping Copeland an awesome place for all our kids to learn and grow!

3rd Grade Multicultural Day- Amanda Ball

Hello, Hola, Ni has, Olá, Heita, Namaste and G'day!! Multicultural Day was a big hit with all the 3rd graders! They got to make homemade pasta in Italy, make a rainstick in Australia, taste some wonderful homemade cookies from Peru, play marbles in France, make an African mask in South Africa, make a tortilla in Mexico and use chop sticks in China. These are just a few of the things made or food tasted on that day. A big thanks to Maria Saenz, the multicultural day chair, for helping set up the signup and being there for set up and the day of the event! I want to give a HUGH thank you to all the volunteers that came to help set up the day before and helped that day. Maria Saenz, Veronica Flores, Danielle Washington, Selina Sauceda, Valerie Effinger, Christina Webster, Andrea Packer, Lesli Morisak, Jackie Villarreal, Wendy Johnson, Cree Sanford, LaKishia Edwards, Karen Thomas, Lindsay Massengill & her mother And last but not lease, thank you to all the 3rd grade teachers! The day would not have been a success without each of you.

2nd Annual Community Movie Night - Amanda Ball

I want to thank everyone who came out to make movie night a success! We had to get cozy in the movie theater (cafeteria) and the screen had to be modified to fit, but we made it work! A big thank you to those that helped make up the auction baskets, drove all day Friday picking up various items, handing out Texas Road House meals & making sure everything was set & ran smoothly that night. Valerie Effinger, Erin Ball, Mrs. Bremer, Mrs. Hernandez, Coach Tucker and of course the fantastic PTO Board members, thanks for all your help. I also would like to thank all the businesses & staff that donated an item to be auctioned & of course everyone that bid on an item that night. Fun was had by all & I can't wait for next year's movie night.

The Garden by Tracy Reynolds

The garden is full of activity. The last garden class the 3rd graders planted tomatoes, bell peppers, peppers, strawberries and herbs. The potatoes are growing too!! As you spring clean your house , if you have pine needles in your yard please bag them and bring them to school. We need them ASAP!! The pine needles help keep the weeds away. If you have a girl scout/ brownies or boy scouts troop needs volunteer opportunities, please consider helping water the garden. The weather is getting warmer and will need more watering.
