TEACHERS OF DISTINCTION
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
This past week was full of recognition for LWTC and LWTHS, a true testament to the passion and dedication that our teachers bring to teaching. We kicked the week off with Mary Crowley and Tara Barr being selected as Teachers of Distinction by the Champions for Learning Education Foundation based on a best practice they submitted.
Mary's best practice aligns with the Marzano strategy Organizing Students to Practice & Deepen New Knowledge, by utilizing my PUGS (Power Up Groups). She developed this technique as a part of her incorporation of Marzano in the classroom several years ago and over the years it has evolved into a proven method by which her adult students feel comfortable in reflecting on their learning and communicating that back to the teacher through an exercise used on days when new content is rolled out.
Tara's best practice is shared within the science department and encompasses a digital interactive notebook. The digital notebook helps students record and represent knowledge, develop and organize student understanding and allows both the student and teacher to reflect on learning and understanding. Each page found within the notebook collection is organized both technologically, visually and academically for students in order to be fluid and effective across all ability levels.
Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our colleagues on Monday, 11/6, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in dining room D. We will have appetizers. We wish them the best as they continue the quest for the Golden Apple.
Next, Rick Ponton and two of his students had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Bonita Springs Short Film Festival Competition Red Carpet Gala on Thursday where ten of fifty film submissions were shown. Dual-enrollment student Cristian Arciniega’s and adult student Jesse DaSilva’s each submitted a film based on the festival's topic "Historic Bonita Springs". Jesse won Best Overall Grand Prize which included a trophy and a $1,000 cash prize. Cristian was one of the 10 finalists and his film was shown. Congratulations to Rick Ponton and the students on their films!
On the national level, Auto Collision instructor Andy Retz along with student Rosalinda Pop-Pablo traveled to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas where Rosalinda was honored as CREF student of the year. Rosalinda had an opportunity to meet Jessi Combs, the fastest woman on four wheels, do some dry racing and see all the latest products in the industry. In addition, Rosalinda received several job offers including one from Tesla. Andy was awarded a $25,000 ProSpot welder for the Auto Collision program. Andy made some strong connections with the Collision Repair Education Foundation who offered to provide support to LWTC's program. Over 160,000 people, including about 2,000 students, were in attendance at the SEMA show. Our hope is to send a group of students who could benefit from such an experience next year.

Precision For All
Over the past few years, we have been guiding our curriculum based on the Common Core or Florida Standards. In addition to these comprehensive standards, our Mathematics teachers are also guided with a set of “Practices” we want our students to master. The 8 Mathematics Practices are introduced as early as Kindergarten and continue on through 12 grade. I would like to focus on a specific practice that all of us here at Lorenzo can highlight within our classrooms.
Students will attend to precision
What does that look like in your classroom? The Chefs in Culinary tell me that without precision, the bakery shop wouldn’t be able to produce cakes, cookies or muffins. The correct balance of baking soda, baking powder and shortening is critical to baked goods rising properly. The Automotive team is teaching their students to measure components to the 1000th of an inch. Precision at this level is essential for components to cycle smoothly within the engine. The Welding team shared that a small miscalculation in the beginning of a weld will multiple itself tenfold by the time the job is complete. This type of error will drastically affect the structure of the end product. Our friends in the medical classrooms teach precision, often with a life or death consequence.
How can we prepare our students to be successful not only in these technical areas, but in any workplace? Be Precise. Don’t allow your students to just get close. Be Precise. Solving a math problem, defining a vocabulary word, selecting a main idea, explaining symbiotic relationships – each of these can be accomplished with precision. Your students will appreciate your attention to detail as it helps them master the content you your classroom and in life.

Imperial Healthcare Center Helps Students Experience Aging
This week, senior and junior nursing students participated in Sensitivity Training to feel what it's like to have failing vision and to experience how elderly patients feel as they age.
It's experiences like this that reaffirm the importance of the role our clinical partners play in the education of our students. Imperial Healthcare Center has been a supporter of the practical nursing and nursing assistants programs for many years.

Do you ever crave sugar after a meal even though you feel full? If you answered YES, keep reading…Our cravings are governed by our hormones, our gut bacteria and our blood-sugar.
1. Eat Clean-being mindful of the foods you choose to eat and creating colorful meals full of real, whole foods.
2. Meal-Prep- You might think you don’t have time, but take it from me when I tell you that meal-prepping will actually give you more time freedom and you’ll save money on groceries.
3. Eat Ferments like yogurt and sauerkraut for replenishing the good bacteria in your gut.
4. Boost Your will power with SLEEP
5. Drink more water! When you think you are hungry, try drinking a glass of water! You may just find yourself wanting to exercise more rather than consume sugar when you’re getting enough H2O!
