We are excited to kick-off another partnership with Make-A-Wish and grant a wish with the help of our students and Westview community. Here is a link to our online fundraising:

• Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.

• The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.

• Student surveys of middle and high schools include three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.

• Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.

• A copy of the survey is available from your child's school under the Annual Surveys tab and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports

Suyoun Choi has been named a top 300 scholar in the 79th Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. A listing of all 300 Scholars can be found here ; nearly 2,000 students entered the competition this year. You are receiving this email because Suyoun Choi requested a recommendation from you during the application process this fall.

This is an extraordinary accomplishment deserving of much celebration! Suyoun Choi will receive $2,000, and their school will also receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities. Suyoun Choi could also be named as one of 40 Finalists, who each receive $25,000 and are invited to Washington, DC for the final competition in March. The top prize for the most promising emerging STEM leader in the United States is $250,000.

Hello Parents and Students,

This is a friendly reminder about the student parking lot located on the South side of the building. The purpose for the student parking lot is just for student drivers who have parking passes and assigned spaces. The student parking lot is not for dropping off students or picking them up. If you need to drop off students or pick them up, that should be done on the North side of the building. Please refer to the following diagram to better understand the flow for traffic.

Overall, parents, visitors, and student drivers need to drive carefully, respectfully, and courteously. Be patient, there are lots of people coming and going all at the same time. We all want to get there as fast as we can, but sometimes, we need to just enjoy the journey.

Our athletic department is looking for help. If you, or someone you know, is interested in working our home basketball games or wresting matches, please contact the athletic office at 503-356-3057. They need workers to help set-up, run scoreboards and scorebooks, take tickets, etc.. These are paid positions.

Dear Westview Community,

I have enjoyed serving as your PTO President for the past six years. At the end of the school year my youngest graduates! This means we are truly in need of volunteers to join the PTO in leadership positions. We currently have all positions open except President, Secretary and Treasurer. Please read through our descriptions of the various jobs we have available. If you’ve always wanted to do something to help out the school without having to be on campus during the school day, we have opportunities for you! None of these are a large task, individually – but when just three parents are handling all of these alone, it is a lot.

We are looking to fill all of these open positions. If you would like to join us in supporting Westview staff, students, clubs, sports and activities, please read through the attached job descriptions. Then join the Executive Board for our meeting on Wednesday, December 15 , at 6 o’clock PM in the Career Center at Westview, if you would be interested in any of these positions. The General PTO meeting will follow immediately after at 6:30 PM. We always do the meetings back-to-back on the third Wednesday of each month throughout the school year. There are no meetings in December or June.

We expect to vote on adding a Communications Person at this meeting, as multiple people have expressed interest in this job. All other positions are completely open so please come join us, ask questions, get support along the way, and enjoy doing something to help support our school and community!

While many students at Westview are involved in sports and activities, well supported by our Westview community, every one of our students needs our support to graduate and succeed in the future. We try not to take away from all of our clubs, sports, and other groups, by hosting car washes, bake sales, or dine out nights; instead we ask that you consider contributing once per school year.

The PTO receives requests from different programs and teachers throughout the year, and we do everything we can to fulfill all of these requests - from graduation mentor program support, to the science department, to the arts. We have helped teachers afford supplies for the classroom and assisted in funding to support field trips. With the end of the calendar year fast approaching, please consider giving today.

Last spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon took the state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.

Our students will take these tests once between January and June 2020. House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt-out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

Want to make your content come alive? Heather Baldwin’s students worked with Dawn Guildner and myself in room S216’s CreativeSpace to incorporate Micro.Bits into their recent assignment. It took one lesson to learn the coding another to create their design, and the creations are amazing! Though not all used Micro.bits, student I spoke with loved the lessons and the creativity they inspired. Want to use a Micro.Bit in your classroom? We have a whole set! Just let me know.

Instead of print books, a Human Library is a library where people from your very own community become “open books,” sharing their stories with Readers (that's you!) who “check them out” for a short time to listen and dialogue. This one-day event offers participants the opportunity to sit down with a real person to ask curious questions and have honest conversations. The Human Library uses the power of these conversations to forge connections, dispel stereotypes, and better understand each other in order to help create more inclusive and cohesive communities.

JUNIOR openings in ASPIRE: What Happens After High School? There are so many options, college, technical training, straight to career, military, Gap Year, and financing some of these options seems so difficult. Volunteer Aspire mentors can help students research and plan. Students can get help with college and career options, scholarships and financial aid, admissions application completion, essay writing, college research, and more.

ASPIRE Mentoring takes place during the school day.

Wed. Jan. 22, 6:30-8:30pm at WHS. This presentation, is a great starting point for parents to get informed about the costs and opportunities associated with planning for college. The college admission process and financial planning process are connected and with the right strategy you could potentially lower the cost of attendance for your student. Sources of funds, unique education planning strategies, and how college financial planning fits into your comprehensive financial planning strategy will be covered.

The Beaverton School District is transitioning to electronic report cards for all students. This upcoming Progress period will be the last time we will be printing and mailing paper progress reports/report cards. The electronic report cards will be accessed through ParentVUE (mobile and desktop). If parents/guardians have not set up their ParentVUE account, they will need to do so by January 2020.

There are resources and guidance on how to set up a ParentVue account. Please view the FAQ for instructions on setting up an account.

There are several benefits to moving to paperless report cards. Families will be able to view grades days after grading days, rather than wait up to two weeks for a report card to come by mail or in their child’s backpack. In addition, moving away from paper is environmentally friendly and cost-effective for the District.

Please encourage parents/guardians to contact their school if they need help setting up or accessing their ParentVUE account or need assistance with a printed copy. We will be sharing more information about this transition in the coming weeks.

The Beaverton School District will offer Open Enrollment for students living within the BSD service area for the 2020-21 school year at the schools listed below.

Applications for Open Enrollment will be available in English and Spanish at each school and at the Administration Center, 16550 SW Merlo Rd., and will be accepted from Monday, December 9, 2019 through Tuesday, January 21, 2020 prior to 2:00 p.m. Students may only apply to two schools. Applications to more than two (2) buildings will be denied. Completed applications should be returned to the school for which the student is applying.

Elementary Schools (# of open slots):

3. Kinnaman (15)
4. Sexton Mountain (10)
5. Terra Linda (12)

Middle Schools: No slots available at middle school

High Schools (# of open slots):

1. Beaverton HS (40)

Principals will make the final determination as to what grade levels will be filled with these Open Enrollment slots.

There are some important factors families must consider when applying for a 2020-21 Open Enrollment transfer:

1. Student must maintain attendance at 92% or greater; no more than one minor suspension per academic year; no suspension greater than five days, and no expulsions.
2. Transportation to the new school is the responsibility of the family. Buses do not travel from the resident school to the open enrollment school; however, occasionally the student may live close to the attendance boundary of the open enrollment school. In this case, parents must submit a written request by completing a “Transportation Service Request" form.
3. Approval is for the duration of the current school level only (i.e., elementary, middle or high school).
4. There is no guarantee of sibling applications being approved.
5. Commitment to attend any school should be for the entire academic year.
6. A lottery system may have to be implemented if there are more applications than allocations available.
7. Copies of the completed applications will be distributed by the receiving school principal, pending a letter or conversation with the parent/guardian of the student.

Parents will be informed of the decisions by the principal of the school applied to within one week after the conclusion of the open enrollment period. Parents will need to confirm acceptance at that time.
