Symbolic Migration
Butterfly, butterfly
One by one they fly away to Mexico
We send them there
They love the journey
And it takes them a long time and they don't care
I wrote this poem for two reasons. One- we help monarchs and second- we are sending a class butterfly to Mexico. (By Maya)
We are participating in a symbolic migration. We sent a class butterfly to a school in Mexico, as the monarch butterflies are making their way south. In the spring, we will receive a class butterfly from a school in Mexico as the butterflies are making their way north. Schools from all across North America will participate in this process.
Science
- Students created and conducted their own science experiments, using 1 M & M. They asked thoughtful questions like: Will an M & M dissolve faster in hot water? If I put a yellow M & M in blue water, will the water turn green? What will happen if I put an M & M in vinegar? Will the shell of an M & M dissolve faster if I stir the water? This assignment required that students do a lot of writing because they had to write their procedures, hypotheses and results. We will use this process of science inquiry many more times throughout the year.
- We have enjoyed investigating our pumpkins. Students began by measuring their pumpkins and writing observations about them. Today we learned that pumpkins will float, no matter how big or small they are. Helia hypothesized that pumpkins float because they are filled with air in the middle. We also tested whether the size of the pumpkin determines how many seeds there are inside.
- These activities have required students to use a variety of measurement tools.
