Week of September 22, 2014
Math
We have been working hard on ADDING and SUBTRACTING whole numbers with two strategies: HTO CHART and JUMPING. Check your child's journal for help with these two strategies. This week we will be adding and subtracting DECIMALS and ROUNDING to find reasonable results. Rounding is difficult for students, especially because in 4th grade we round up to the HUNDRED THOUSANDS place. Practice! Practice! Practice!
Rounding to the Nearest Ten
Science
Now that we know what this year holds for us in Science, we're ready to start learning about it! This week begins our unit on MATTER. Matter is anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE. We will be learning how to CLASSIFY and MEASURE mass. This week we are learning how to measure an object's LENGTH. We will be using scientific tools, like rulers and meter sticks to measure in MILLIMETERS, CENTIMETERS and METERS.
