Volume 18, Number 7 - January 5, 2022
Happy New YEAR!
Welcome, 2023! We are looking forward to a great new year. We hope you and the kids had some time to rest and relax. The next five months tend to be fast and furious. Our kids will begin course selection for next year so stay tuned for information from our counselors.
We have two 8th-grade parents that are leading the 8th-grade dance committee. Their first meeting is next week on Wednesday, January 11th @ 6:30 p.m. in the CMS library. Please see the January/February Events for more information.
In the next couple of weeks, students will be taking home feedback regarding their CBAs (curriculum-based assessments). The CBA is an indication of whether they are learning the content. Our teachers will be working with our students to help them grow and learn what they need to. However, students may need to come in for extra help on their own or they may be asked to come in by their teacher. Please encourage your child to stay after school to complete work, make up work, or go in for help. If students are not making at least a 70 on their assessments, they should be staying after school.
We are hosting our 2nd Annual Spelling Bee in the CMS Library on Friday, January 6th. Your child has been notified if they are participating.
Finally, below are a few reminders as we start off our new year.
All students should be working on Reading Plus and IXL for Math DAILY. They are major grades for each subject. Students also have access to IXL for Science and Social Studies. Students in 8th grade can easily access their content to provide extra help and support to get ready for their assessments.
We continue to stress to our students the importance of checking their grades. Our teachers are available after school for academic coaching. A light snack and juice are provided for students. Students can ride the late bus daily at 5:00 p.m. They don't need to sign up. Buses will drop off at drop-off locations.
Our library will also be open Monday - Thursday for students that need to work on IXL and Reading Plus.
We want to remind you that you can only drop off a meal for your child during your child's mealtime. You will have to raptor in and take their lunch to the cafeteria. This is a district policy.
Please also remember that 2:30 is the latest you can check out your child for the day unless it is an emergency.
IDs - Students are responsible for wearing one daily and will have to purchase one if they do not bring their ID to school.
Please let us know how we can help you throughout the year. You are welcome to email me directly or call my secretary, Laura Torres, to schedule a meeting with me if you have any concerns or questions. It is my privilege and honor to serve as your child's Principal. Thank you for your support and we look forward to another great year!

Important Information for the 22-23 School Year
Below is some important information to review for the upcoming school year.
Meal Delivery
Cell phones and earbuds
Student Devices
Hays CISD Campuses Closed to Meal Delivery Services - As part of enhanced safety at campuses, beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, all Hays CISD campuses will no longer accept deliveries from meal delivery services or restaurants for student lunches. And, campuses will no longer have drop-off tables for meals. Parents may still bring outside food for their children if they plan to deliver the meals directly to their children during the child’s designated lunch period. All guests are required to follow existing safety protocols and check in with an ID at the front office. We will make sure that you know when your child’s lunch is so that if you do come to campus, you come during lunchtime.
Hays CISD Middle School Campus Cell Phone & Earbud Rules Changing - This procedure is intended to support student learning while minimizing student distractions and disruptions. The procedure will also support and enhance current safety procedures and protocols. Teachers are expected to incorporate technology as a part of their lesson plans as long as it supports the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Students may use their own technology (laptops or iPad) to support the learning objectives in the classroom. During an emergency, students will, of course, be able to use their cell phones
Student use guidelines during the school day (7:25 AM-3:35 PM)
- Students may use their personal electronics on campus before 7:35 AM and after 3:35 PM.
- Cell phones must be out of sight and on airplane mode in the classroom.
- Students will not have their cell phones out during class or passing periods.
- Cell Phone use is prohibited in bathrooms, locker rooms, changing areas, or any area considered private, and while riding on a bus.
- Principals may allow students to use their cell phones during lunchtime.
Violation of electronics procedure
Students who violate the procedure will have the following consequences.
- 1st Offense – Warning
- 2nd Offense – Confiscation of the device.
- 3rd Offense – Confiscation of the device and parent notified.
- 4th Offense – Confiscation of the device, mandatory parent meeting. Assign one hour of afterschool detention. The device returned at the end of the day.
- Multiple Offenses – Confiscation of the device, charge a $10 fee, and assigned evening In-School Suspension.
Students who fail to surrender devices will elevate consequences immediately. The confiscated phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
Parent expectations - Parents can help their child support this policy, the learning environment, and our school’s mission by discussing the school expectation with your child
Student Device Program - Hays CISD will continue to provide instructional devices to support learning. Families can purchase an optional protection plan for district-owned devices to cover accidental damage or theft. Plans range from $10.00 to $40.00, based on your child’s National School Lunch Program (NSLP) designation. Protection plans are not required but are highly recommended to minimize out-of-pocket expenses for lost or damaged devices. If you wish to purchase the protection plan, you must make the purchase within the first 60 days of school. At CMS, students will be required to purchase a device protection plan if they want to take their chromebook home. They will also be required to meet with their grade level administrator to talk about expectations. During the registration process, you will be given the opportunity to purchase a plan. You can also purchase the plan directly at the following URL:
Need to Change Your Form Response? If you have already completed Student Online Registration, the system will not allow you to change your response. Please download and complete the Technology Permission Form (English/Spanish) Email your completed form to your child’s campus or to student.registration@hayscisd.net. Your form responses will be updated in our system.
