Mrs. Mogg's Monday Memo
MATH
Your child can now practice math on Sumdog.com We did this together in the computer lab Friday. Your child has his/her log-in information in the back of his/her planner. It can be done at home !
We are beginning Topic 10 which is on Place Value this week. 100s, 10s, and 1s.
It will be toward the end of the year before we get to clocks and money, BUT please be giving your child experience NOW so they will grasp the concepts more quickly.
Today's children don't see face clocks (as opposed to digital) as often. Please make these available to your child and help him/her learn to read the clocks.
Today's children don't see coins/dollars used as much, either, as most of us use those convenient credit and debit cards! If you will use cash in their presence, and have your children count coins on a regular basis, it will help them a lot!
We will also have a unit on measuring.... Length in yards, feet, inches, centimeters, meters; Capacity in cups, pints, quarts, gallons. If you will please discuss these with your child, give them practice with measuring, it will be very helpful. Some ideas; Measuring cups in the bathtub, cooking, measuring furniture with a ruler, a room with a yardstick.

SPELLING
WINTER WEATHER
You may want to send an extra knit hat and pair of gloves for your child to keep in his/her locker in case what he/she wears to school gets lost on the bus. We do like to get the children outside as much as possible for recess. The fresh air and exercise is so good!
Many of the children have chapped lips and hands. You are welcome to send in chap stick and/or lotion for your child to keep in the locker. Your child may stop at the locker after each bathroom break to apply it.
Some of the students are complaining of scratchy throats. Feel free to send in a bottle of water with a pop-up cap to help soothe dry throats.
AR quizzes
With today's papers, you'll find a printout of the AR quizzes your child has taken from Jan. 4 until last Thursday, Jan. 21. I have written the TOTAL number of AR points that your child had at that time.
In the lead with 56 points is Kenzee, followed by Landon with 45 and Madison with 40 !
Handwriting
This week we're going to focus on correct printing. It's really important that letters are formed correctly as cursive writing is based on the D'Nealian style printing taught here in Plainfield.
Students did a sample in class last week. I graded it and made comments on most.
Please help your child be keeping an eye on HOW the letters are being formed. All printed letters start at the top.
I'm sending home a paper that shows the correct formation of all letters. You'll want to keep it handy for reference for you and your child.
Lower case m and n start with the downward stroke, retrace up, then the humps.
Lower case a's, g's, q's, and d's are formed with a "balloon" first, then the upward or downward stroke.
We hope to start working on cursive this spring. It will be a much easier transition for the students who are forming the printed letters correctly.
