Norris News!
A weekly update from campus...
September 22, 2017
We finished up another busy week of learning here at Norris!!! It is exciting to have our Norris Watch D.O.G.S Dads on campus! We had lots of dads and kids here last night for our Watch D.O.G.S Night enjoying pizza and learning about what our dads can do to help our school.
Our students had a Rootin’ Tootin’ good time at the Wild West Book Fair! We enjoyed seeing so many grandparents and loved ones here this week to have lunch with their students and shop at the Book Fair. Thank you to Sarah Davis and our amazing PTA for running such an awesome Book Fair. Check out the pictures below of all the fun happenings from the Book Fair!
Have a great weekend!!

Frisco ISD will now allow 8 days to be excused, if a parent note is provided, for the whole school year. These days may be used at parents' discretion.
Notes from parents due to student illness will count towards the 8 days. After the 4th consecutive day of illness, or after the parent note limit has been exceeded, a doctor's note will be required.
Vacations
A trip may be excused for up to 4 days if a parent note is provided. This will count toward the 8 days listed above. After the 4th consecutive day, the remaining days will be unexcused.
More information went out in Thursday folders. Please contact the front office with any questions.

Attention all 5th grade parents
CogAT TESTING – During the Mornings of October 3rd, 4th, and 5th, all fifth graders in FISD will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Please schedule morning appointments on days other than CogAT testing. The CogAT gives teachers and parents a snapshot of students’ higher level thinking, reasoning, and problem solving abilities (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative, and overall ability), as compared with fifth graders in the nation. Please be sure your awesome fifth grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on these days. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “personal best” on the test. It’s an opportunity to ‘show what you know!’
Parent Learning Community
Please join us on September 26th at 8:00 a.m. for a parent learning opportunity TESTING 101 at Elliot Elementary. See the flyer below for more information.
Student-Parent Empowerment Program
The “Parenting in the Age of Social Media” workshop will be held at the Student Opportunity Center - 6928 Maple Street, Frisco, Texas. Our presenter, Mrs. Daphne Levenson, is a FISD parent and community volunteer. This will be a great follow-up workshop to continue to the conversation about Social Media after the highly anticipated FISD Screenagers Parenting Workshop (see the flyer below).
Character Lab Update!
Character Lab is now up and running! Character Lab is a character education program whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development. Character Lab is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2013 by three individuals: Angela Duckworth, a MacArthur Fellow and Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania; Dave Levin, co-founder of the KIPP public charter schools; and Dominic Randolph, Head of Riverdale Country School.
Character Lab is a program that is widely used in FISD and implemented here at Norris through Character Lab lessons taught by our specials team. Teachers and staff also acknowledge when students demonstrate and or grow in the 9 character areas as identified through Character Lab. The nine traits with definitions are listed in this link: https://characterlab.org/tools
This week and next, your students are exploring purpose and are creating folders to track goals and their progress toward them. Goals are created using the SMART goal method. To see what SMART stands for, see the graphic below.
- Parent Challenge: Create a family SMART goal and work toward them together. Remember to celebrate each step and when you accomplish your goal!
