One Book, One School

Next year we'll use the text Emmanuel's Dream to continue our work around ordinary heroes and one person is enough to change the world.

Kristin is ordering books for you and will get them in your mailbox once they arrive. You can also watch a snippet about Emmanuel on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He starred in a documentary about his life called Emmanuel's Gifts and you can visit the Emmanuel Educational Foundation and Sports Academy (EEFSA) website at EmmanuelsDream.org.

Joining the 4th grade team . . . Maureen Sitzman

I took an alternative path to teaching roughly 5 years ago. My undergrad is in English & Writing from Saint Mary's College. I then worked in Corporate Human Resources and IT for many years. After having a family and teaching preschool, I went back to school at Ball State for my teaching license. I've spent the last three years in 4th grade after two years in Kindergarten. My free time is spent on the sidelines of my boys' sporting events. I'm extremely excited to be joining the Cumberland Road team!

Introducing our new AP . . . Mitch Hammersley

I'm thrilled to become a Roadrunner and learn more about you and our kids. We have the privilege to serve them everyday, and it is a wonderful opportunity to serve alongside you.

I was born and raised in Southern Indiana in the town of North Vernon and completed my undergrad at the University of Indianapolis having studied elementary education and music (voice), and in the next few weeks, I'll finish at UIndy again with an MBA in Educational Leadership.

I've been very fortunate to have had many different experiences in education in a short time. It certainly has never been boring. After college, I began my career teaching first and second graders in Elkhart Community Schools. When our daughter was born, my wife and I decided to move closer to family. We landed in Avon where I taught third graders, and, shortly thereafter, I accepted a position as Instructional Coach in the same school. In a decision that made absolutely no sense to our families, my wife and I decided to move back up north so that I could accept a position as Master Teacher in the TAP System in Goshen Community Schools. I had the privilege to meet and work with Lisa that year. It was 2012, and the housing market was shambles. We were unable to sell our 1200 square foot home amidst the dirt cheap giants that surrounded us, so we moved our now family of four back to Avon. I accepted a position teaching Language Arts to sixth graders at Brownsburg where I also served as PLC Leader and Department Head.

Most importantly, I am husband to Rachel and father to Lena (9), William (6), and Warren (2). Lena and Will attend Avon schools, and my wife works at Connection Pointe Church in Brownsburg. Warren works full-time perfecting the Terrible Twos. It's a good thing that he's cute. Life is the good kind of crazy, but I might enjoy the new found quiet time in my drive to and from school now.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to begin our work together and look forward to meeting all of you very soon. Enjoy your summer.
