Maryville Guidance
March 2015
February Guidance
We will be covering Habit 6.
HABIT SIX: SYNERGIZE
Together is Better.
I value other people's strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different from me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people's ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others, we canc reat better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble.
ABRI Data
For the 2014-2015 school year, students have earned 54 referrals. This time last year we were at 48, so although we are higher this year, we are close. Last February students earned 14 referrals and this year they only earned 2, so we are making progress!
My goal for the summer is to update our PBIS/ KYCID folders, so let me know if you have any suggestions. PBIS schools have been asked to distinguish between expectations and rules, so the matrices for various locations among the school will be a priority. At a six hour workshop on the Leader In Me, we discussed this at great length and a school mentioned how they did this with their students. I am hoping that after I update the folder and matrices, the first two weeks of school can focus on assisting students in creating their own versions for school.
I also attended a breakout session on bus behavior. It totally energized me and I believe next school year will be a whole new ballgame when it comes to bus referrals! The man who led this session works at Jefferson County Public Schools. Last year they had 274 bus referrals. After implementing their new bus behavior system, they have had a total of 18 referrals for THE WHOLE YEAR!

Internet Safety and Instagram
Although the most popular social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc) all have age restrictions, many of our students are still online. I joke that I stalk our students on these sites and report them, but the reality is that I do. I don't report everyone, but if I see something that bothers me, I report it and then meet with that student.
All of my accounts are private and I don't "friend" any parent unless I have a relationship with them beyond school. I never friend a student, although I get lots of requests (as I'm sure you do as well.) I have started an instagram account for "Counselor Mrs. Barron." I am posting positive quotes, uplifting pictures and memes on internet safety. Kids (and teachers Mrs. Aikman!) can follow me. When they follow me, I then have access to see what they are posting and do a bit of monitoring myself.
The goal is to make them think before they post and comment online. It's also part of that old saying, "If you can't beat them, join them." Hopefully by using the students' form of communication they might "hear" more of what we've been teaching.
If you have a student that you are concerned about their social media usage, please let me know.
