Mustang Service Award
Stephen Hempstead High School
"Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."
Hempstead Mustangs have a long history of service to their school and community. To honor this service, Hempstead High School offers students the Mustang Service Award.
Who can earn this award?
All students in grades 9-12 are eligible to earn awards for service done during the school year.
What is the award?
Students who successfully complete their service requirements will earn an award recognizing their achievement. Students completing 75 - 149 hours of service will earn a medal and those completing 150 or more hours will earn a plaque.
Why earn a service award?
More and more employers are recognizing the value of student service. On a job application or resume, service stands out as an important indicator of an applicant’s motivation and concern. These are attributes employers typically seek in their workers. Volunteer service is also an important way to show involvement in and out of school.
How do I get started?
Obtain a documentation form from the Guidance Office. Take the form with you when you are performing a service activity and request the adult supervisor of that service activity to sign and verify your hours. All documentation forms will be due late-April and can be turned in at the Guidance Office or to Mrs. Slade (A170 or my mail box).

If you are interested in service, please consider joining a service club at Hempstead High School: Key Club, Octagon Club or Interact Club.
When can I begin working on service?
Right now! Students will be recognized for service efforts done between the month of May of one school year to April of the following school year (example: May of 2016 to April of 2017). Volunteer work over the summer will also count toward successful completion of an award.
What counts as service?
The following are just a few of the many opportunities for service in the community and around Hempstead. Services will not be considered when performed for family, friends, relatives or when money is received. Ask your club advisors or teachers for even more possibilities. Parents and students should carefully select the most suitable and safe opportunities possible.
