When speaking with many of you, you always seem to speak to me about a great experience your child had with one of the amazing faculty members here at DHS. Now is your chance to honor that difference maker! The State of New Jersey is looking to honor exceptional teachers, paraprofessionals, and educational service through the NJDOE Governor's Educator-of-the-Year Recognition Program. Delran Township Public Schools would like your help in nominating educators to represent our four schools. All nominations are due by Friday, December 7th.
It's hard to believe that the second marking period is almost halfway done. Quarter 2 Interim Grades will be posted on the Parent Portal on Friday, December 14th.
Have you ever heard the DHS Band perform on stage? What about the Bel Canto/Chamber Choir? You also can't forget the Grizzley Tones! Now is your chance to see them all at one performance. The DHS Choir/Band Concert will take place on Tuesday, December 18th at 7pm in the Performing Arts Center. I look forward to sharing this special evening of music with all of you.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or (856) 461-6100 x3005.
Vaping
How many of us truly know the effects of this? Do you even know what a vape looks like? It truly looks like a USB drive. With the advent of Google Drive, your children are not really using USB drives anymore. The pictures below are of vapes that have been confiscated here at DHS. Vaping has increased exponentially over the past few years around the country. Vaping is not a problem in Delran, it's a nationwide epidemic. They sell cartridges in many flavors so it is an enjoyable experience; however, they contain nicotine which ultimately will become an addiction.
As I continue to research this growing teen epidemic, the news is not very positive. The health effects are beginning to become more clear to the medical community and it is NOT good. It has been linked to respiratory disease and other harmful effects. HERE is an article recently published which will give you the ABCs of Vaping.
The new trend is for manufacturers to produce cartridges which contain THC or Marijuana Oils. Children can order these online and they are shipped right to their home. As I am sure you are aware, the human brain is not fully developed until it's mid-20's. Any and every illegal substance that in taken retards the brain's development. Please be vigilant at home and let's work together to support your children, our next generation of leaders.
Please speak with your children about vaping and the negatives surrounding their use. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
If you child should need support for quitting vaping or with drugs an alcohol, we have supports here at school in the Guidance Counselors as well as our Student Assistance Counselor, Ms. Lauren Soto. Please feel free to reach out to any of us at any time.
